She takes another sip, then places the cup on the nightstand. “I don’t regret it, you know,” she says quietly. “I knew what I was doing. And I’d do it again.”

A wave of relief washes over him.

He couldn’t love her more. He’s so utterly enamored with her that it would scare her away if she knew the intensity of his feelings.

So, he leans in and kisses her, tasting the chamomile on her tongue and swallowing her sighs against his mouth.

Audrey ishis, and he’ll be damned if anyone gets in the way of them starting a new life in Canada.

If someone so much aslooksat her wrong, they’re dead.

Now that he has his mate, he’s more dangerous than ever.

The world isn’t prepared for the depths that he’ll go for her.

Her phone buzzes, and she groans when she looks at the screen. “It’s Mindy,” she mutters. “I don’t want to have to face her after all this.”

He’s grateful the subject changed before he could make any violent declarations of love. “She’s on our side,” he promises her. “She’s willing to do whatever it takes to get us to Canada.”

Audrey swallows and nods. “But this stupid thing…” she points to the ankle bracelet that gives off a smallchirp.

“Your sister made a run to the hardware store for us.” He places a kiss on Audrey’s forehead at her surprised expression. “I can cut that off in five minutes, but the second it’s deactivated, we’ll have to leave the city. So we need to plan accordingly.”

There’s a softmeowat the door, followed by the sound of paws against wood.

Julian chuckles and walks over to let Pearl into the bedroom. Audrey smiles as she watches the cat rub her body along Julian’s calves.

“It’s a big deal she likes you, you know,” Audrey says. “I was furious at her for that.”

He grins at her. “You had every reason to be mad at me. You still do.”

She nods. “Yes, I suppose so,” she murmurs. “Yet somehow I still let you in my bed.”

“Funny how that happens,” he says, sitting on the mattress and resting a hand on her knee. “Maybe I’m more charming than you give me credit for.”

She huffs out a laugh as Pearl hops up onto the mattress. “It’s possible. I just…” she covers his hand with her own and sighs. “I’m scared, Julian. What if this doesn’t work? What if we can’t get to Canada?”

He shakes his head, her anxiety swirling with his own. “That won’t happen, baby. We will make it, one way or another. I won’t let anything happen to you. Neither will Mindy.”

As if on cue, Audrey’s phone rings, and Mindy is on the other end of the line.

“She’s outside,” Audrey announces. “Get some clothes on and let her in.”

He dresses quickly and tries not to let fear poison his thoughts as he heads towards the front room.

But once Audrey’s sister steps through the doorway and grants him a friendly smile, he realizes he had nothing to worry about.

Mindy wants what’s best for Audrey and will go to any lengths to make it happen.

Just like him.

And by the time they cut the ankle tracker off Audrey and they say their hurried goodbyes, he’s more confident than ever that it will work out.

When they reach the border, they’re welcomed into Canada without any issue.

Abel stayed true to his word.
