It’s howgentleJulian is. She catches glimpses of it when he interacts with Pearl, talking to her softly as she purrs on his lap, or when Mindy hugs him and he returns her embrace. Behind the violence that was molded into him, she sees the ghost of a sweet man that would have had a much different future if he had never presented as an Alpha.

He wanted to be a veterinarian at one point, and that path was torn away from him.

Maybe one day, if they become permanent Canadian citizens, they can both go back to school.

The United States is still in chaos, but Julian emerges as an unexpected voice. Reluctantly, he’s worked with Abel to recount his time at the military base, testifying in front of an investigative committee, and what Audrey learns horrifies her.

It was so much worse than she could have imagined. If she thinks about it too long, the guilt of working at the lab consumes her.

So, they’re strong for each other.

And Pearl, of course, who hops off the mantle and rubs between both of their legs for attention, purring loudly.

“And what exactly were you thinking about me?” Julian asks carefully, his voice low, snapping her out of her thoughts.

She senses the underlying insecurity in him.

He thinks she’s going to run, still.

But how could she, when her whole life is with him and Pearl?

It will take time to convince him otherwise, she knows that.

Still…

“I was thinking how proud I am of you,” she says softly, tilting her head up to kiss him gently. She doesn’t mind the tiny scars that cut across his lips, and he finally admitted to her that he did it as a nervous habit.

It broke her heart.

He scoffs. “I think you’re losing your mind, sweetheart. Or that Stockholm Syndrome finally kicked in.”

But he smiles all the same, and it makes her smile in return.

Suddenly, she knows it’s time.

“Julian?”

“Hmm?” His eyes are soft, full of the gentleness she’s come to adore.

“I love you, too.”
