“Can I have a drink please?” I ask as he pours himself a big measure of whatever he’s drinking.

“Not until you finish your food.”

“I wasn’t asking for your permission,” I snap. That gets Christian’s attention as he turns around and stares at me.

“Good because I wasn’t giving it. You have hardly eaten all day, if not for weeks and I won’t allow you to drink hard alcohol on an empty stomach. Finish your chicken and veg and we will discuss it then.”

“But I’m thirsty,” I argue. I watch Christian reach into the tiny fridge under the bar and pull out a bottle.

“Sean,” he calls as he throws it, Sean catches it with ease and hands it over to me.

“I don’t want water,” I sulk.

“It’s that or nothing until you have finished your dinner. Keep arguing with me baby girl and we will be discussing punishments quicker than you thought.”

I turn and stare at Jason who holds his hands up.

“Don’t look at me I agree with him. I saw the state of your fridge and cupboards. You can’t tell me you have been eating properly.”

I turn to Sean and Maximus but neither of them argues.

I pick my plate back up and force a fork full of food into my mouth, before glaring at Christian.

“Good girl,” he says with a smile which I feel deep in my gut and lower. Damn my body for wanting to please him.

“As I started to explain to you before we got a little carried away on the desk yesterday,” Christian starts with a smile as he walks back to his seat. “I would gut anyone who disrespects you. As I’m sure you have figured out, there’s a lot of things you don’t know about what we do and how we became so rich. As you saw by your landlord’s reaction to seeing me, the O’Reilly name is something that is feared, and not just in the ring.” Christian sits forward and leans his elbows on his knees holding his glass between his two hands. I can tell there’s a real chance I’m not going to like what I hear.

“We have built what we have up from the ground. There were people that our father was in trouble with before we were rich, and we had to do things to pay off his debts. Over time we have gained power and taken over the businesses we once worked for. Yes, a lot of what we do is illegal, we have also had to kill and hurt people to get to where we are. None of us will apologise for that. Especially when who we are could keep you safe.”

“What do you do?” I ask. Not looking anywhere but at Christian.

“We deal in many things, firearms, illegal fights, loaning out large sums of cash but there are certain things we won’t touch. Women and children are a no-go for us, if we get wind of sex trafficking or paedophile rings, we end them. That doesn’t make us saints though. We’ve killed people for crossing us, we have killed by request, and we all would kill for you.”

“What about drugs?” I ask.

“We only deal in drugs at our underground fights. We do that as a way of making sure only clean stuff is used and we can’t be held accountable for anyone dying from a dirty batch on our premises,” Jason explains as he sits forward, looking at me.

“Do you fix fights?” I ask as I look at the twins smiling at me.

“Do you think we need to fix the fights to win? I’m wounded, princess,” Sean says placing a hand over his chest.

“Why are you telling me all of this now?” I ask. Christian lets out a deep sigh as he sits up a bit.

“Because now you are here and we’re going to be open about how much you mean to us you could be exposed to that side of our lives.”

“Could it put me in danger?” I ask nervously.

“In theory yes, but we will never allow any harm to come to you,” Maximus says as he runs a hand down my back. I place my empty plate on the table and curl up on his lap. Maximus wraps his arms around my shoulders and holds me tight.

“What are you thinking, sweetheart?” Christian asks as Max runs a hand over my head.

“It’s a lot to take in,” I admit.

“I know, but I can promise we will always do everything in our power to make sure you are safe and nothing that we do interferes with you,” he says watching me. I take a deep breath and nod.

“I know,” I add quickly.

“That being said there are a few things you will need to know and do if the situation ever calls for it,” Christian says as he continues to watch me. I feel my body tighten as I shake a little.
