“He isn’t going to handle it well if she’s been hurt,” Terry remarks next to me. I shake my head as I try and memorise the blueprints, working out an escape from each room.

My phone rings and I answer it not saying a word.

“She’s coming now and crying,” Christian mutters before I hear the phone being put down.

“Hey, sweetheart what’s happened?” the change in tone when he speaks to Jasmine is such a contrast to when he speaks to anyone else.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Jasmine sniffs, and my anger rises.

“Okay, I take that back, tell me what happened,” his tone changing and I know he will get it out of her. Jasmine can be a brat at times, but Christian handles her better than anyone.

“Just leave it,” she whispers so quietly I only just hear her.

“I will go in there and start asking questions, did Damien do something to hurt you?” I hear Jasmine huff before she explodes.

“What like taking my virginity and lasting less than ten seconds before telling everyone I was a shit lay!” she yells before bursting into tears. My head snaps to Terry in disbelief and can see he’s ready to commit murder alongside me. Terry may have never met Jasmine in person, but he’s well aware of her and how important she is to my brothers and me.

“Come on sweetheart let’s get you home, where we can talk properly,” Christian sighs her sobbing becomes muffled as if something is blocking the sound. I know is more than likely he’s holding her as she cries into his shoulder. Even through the phone, I know his jaw and fists will be clenched. If Jasmine wasn’t his sole priority right now, he would hunt down and hurt Damien himself.

“I don’t want to go home can we go for a drive, please?” Jasmine asks. I hear Christian agreeing before the sound of the car engine starts up.

“I’ll just text Jason and let him know someone else will be taking him home,” Christian explains as I hear him handling the phone.

“Don’t tell him, please, he will be angry at me.”

My chest hurts that she thinks I could be even slightly angry with her over this. I’m furious with that prick Damien but nothing in me could ever be mad at my Jazzy.

“Jason would never be upset with you. You know that sweetheart,” Christian says as Jasmine sighs.

“I’m angry at myself,” she whispers.

“Come on let’s get out of here,” Christian replies before the line goes dead.

I look out of the windscreen and wait for the lights of Christian’s car to appear in the distance. As soon as I see the first signs of them, I duck down in my seat to make sure Jasmine doesn’t spot me. She won’t recognise the car thankfully.

“They’ve passed,” Terry says as he starts the car and heads towards the farm. “How are you going to play this?” he asks. I reach into the glove compartment and pull out a pair of leather gloves.

“We head up to the house and wait for him to be alone. Then I’ll be having a few words with Mr ten second wonder,” I growl as I look at the gloves in my hand. The phone beeps and I see a message from Christian.

Christian:Only six people are left in the house. One staying, four waiting for lifts. You heard what he did, make him pay for deflowering our girl.

Terry pulls into a sheltered area, where we hide, and wait until it’s time to pay Damien a visit.

I pull into our five-car garage and climb out slamming the door behind me. Walking into the house I’m met with silence. I know if anyone’s awake, they’ll be in the sitting room, where we tend to all come together in this huge house. I head straight there in the need of a drink after this evening. I check my watch as I walk through and see it’s just past midnight. I can’t remember the last time I was home this early on a Saturday. There’s usually an issue at one of our many clubs I need to deal with, or an event I need to show my face at. But tonight, I cancelled and made sure I was available for Jasmine, and I’m so glad I did.

I walk into the sitting room to find Sean in his usual spot holding a glass of whiskey.

“Where are the others?” I ask walking to the small bar I had installed and pouring myself a glass.

“Maximus is in the shower, and I believe Jason’s on his way home,” Sean replies as he looks over his shoulder at me. “Is Jasmine home, and okay?”

I look at him and sigh.

“She’s home, but she’s far from okay,” I admit as I knock back the shot in my glass before pouring another one. I expect Sean to bombard me with questions, checking on the most important woman in our lives, but he doesn’t. He sits and gives me time to regroup and calm myself. I look down at my empty hand and notice how white my knuckles are from holding it in such a tight fist. I force my hand to open and wiggle my fingers as I focus on the picture of Jasmine dancing in Romeo and Juliet last summer, which hangs proudly over the bar. We have pictures of her everywhere in this house. My favourite though is one of her and me on a beach four months ago that I keep on the desk in my study. I’d taken her out for the day, and she’d wanted ice cream. We sat on that beach for hours talking and laughing and it was the first time she leaned into me, initiating physical contact. It had been a sign I was finally getting through the protective walls she’s built around herself after so many people abandoned her when she needed them.
