I look over at the sofa in my office for the hundredth time today. Jasmine’s there fast asleep wrapped in a blanket. We were all woken by her having a nightmare at three this morning, it had taken all of us to calm her and get her to settle back to sleep. By four Jason had snuck out of her bed and I didn’t need to ask where he was going.

Jason has placed a fifty-thousand-pound price on Hudsons head and when he finds him, I have no doubt Jasons face will be the last thing Hudson ever sees. I’ve not attempted to call him, there’s no point, this is something that should have been done years ago. Do I hold my brother, my best friend, responsible for Jasmines attack? Yes. But I don’t need to tell him that as he holds himself responsible too.

I put down my pen and run my fingers through my hair. I’ve spent the morning trying to get to the bottom of how much Tommy owes people and who we can expect to make a move. So far nearly everyone I have spoken to has accepted that we are not responsible for Tommy’s issues and if they try to use Jasmine to get us to pay they will be signing their own death warrant. No one uses our girl against us and gets away with it.

I have never felt fear as I did yesterday when I saw the notification that Jasmine had activated her panic alarm. When I saw her injuries I walked away and lost my shit. I’ve managed to hide the damage I did in the sitting room, thankfully Mrs Brown tidied it all away before Jasmine would see anything. By this morning the broken glasses and decanter from the bar had been replaced and Jasmine will never be the wiser. Tommy maybe my father, but he will pay for sending people after her, I don’t care what happens to him anymore after hearing he offered up as payment for his debts. The fact he would use a person as payment, let alone his stepdaughter, has killed any chance he had of us helping him out. As far as we are concerned he is dead to us.

A knock at the door pulls me out of my thoughts and unfortunately wakes Jasmine.

“Hang on,” I call out as I approach Jasmine and run a hand over her head. The bruising on her face has come out over the last twenty-four hours and her lip still bleeds occasionally. I hate seeing her in pain, and her skin marked like this.

“Sorry sweetheart, I’ll take whoever it is to the sitting room.”

“It’s okay, I’m awake,” she replies with a smile. I lean forward and press a kiss on her forehead before walking to the office door. It takes me a moment to realise who is standing there with Sean.

“If you have come to cause trouble for Jasmine…”

“No Sir, Danielle just wished to see how Miss Connors is after yesterday. I came to offer any help in finding who assaulted her.”

I stare at King in front of me before looking at his daughter who is standing behind him nervously.

“One word out of your mouth that causes her any upset and I will remove you myself.”

Danielle looks up at me and nods.

“I deserve that,” she whispers. I nod and step back to hold the door open. As they walk into the office, I look at Sean.

“Flint messaged he will be here soon; he says he wants to talk. Can you see him through when he gets here?”

“No problem. How is she?” he asks looking behind me where Jasmine is talking quietly to Danielle now sitting beside her.

“I think the tablets are making her sleepy as she’s been dozing on and off all morning. I won’t let the Kings stay for long.”

Sean nods as his hands ball into fists beside him.

“If she gets too tired shout and I will take her upstairs and get her settled in her room.” He looks behind me as if checking if anyone is listening. “Any news on Jason?”

“Nothing, Maximus still looking for him?” Sean nods in response.

Maximus had woken up and gone to find Jason, even though I told him not to. Even if Maximus did find him, he would never bring him home. I have a feeling the two of them won’t stop until Hudson is six feet under.

“If you hear anything keep me posted. I’ll shout if Jasmine needs anything.”

Sean nods again and walks off back into the rest of the house where I know he will be trying to keep busy to avoid worrying about his brothers and the situation we have found ourselves in.

I take a deep calming breath before turning around to see Jasmine and Danielle talking quietly to each other, even though they don’t seem completely at ease, I have a feeling their relationship may have changed after the events of yesterday. I turn to see Mr King looking at them, obviously thinking the same as me. As I walk into the room, he turns to me and offers a small smile. I nod towards my desk and we both move over to it.

“What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”

???

Half an hour later, the Kings have gone home and I’m sitting on the sofa with Jasmine lying down, her head resting on my lap as she reads on her kindle. I’m just about to ask if she wants some more painkillers when a commotion sounds from outside the closed door.

“You fucking arsehole!”

Jumping to my feet I stand ready to protect Jasmine as the office door flies open, Sean and another person barrel through. Jasmine screams behind me as I jump in and grab the person Sean is pinning to the ground. Sean gets out of the way as I lift the guy from the floor and pull my knife from my pocket holding it against his throat before I even see who I’m pinning to the wall. Two security guards rush into the room guns drawn but staying a step behind me.

“You think you can come into our home and throw your fucking weight around!” I yell as I look into Flints red face. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” I yell staring at him. I’ve known Flint for years, I’ve shared many late-night whiskeys with the guy and never had an issue with him before.
