“Screw it,” I mutter as I pull out my phone and Trudy squeals excitedly next to me.

Sadie:Hey, fancy coffee Saturday morning?

Jay:Sadie?

Sadie: Yeah probably should have added my name LOL. It’s me.

Jay:Coffee sounds great. Give me your address and I’ll pick you up.

I quickly send it and he says he will pick me up at eleven. I turn to Trudy and smile.

“Looks like I have a coffee date with your brother,” I laugh as Trudy squeals excitedly again.

I have to remind myself that it’s just one date. I am sure after he hears a few things about me he will run for the hills like everyone else.

Chapter Five

Jayden

I pull up outside Sadies house and let out a deep breath to calm my nerves. Jumping out of the car I walk to her front door and knock.

I wait for a moment, and my heart slows when I hear nothing from inside. I wait a few more seconds before knocking again a little harder. Am I early? I check my watch, it’s eleven as planned. I’m just about to go back to my car to get my phone when I hear the lock on the door moving.

A smile spreads across my face as the door opens and Sadie is there in front of me but it slips when I see her pale face. Sadies eyes have lost their bright blue colour and are instead a dull grey. Her cheeks flush as she looks down at herself, obviously embarrassed to be seen in loose jogging bottoms and a baggy hoody. Her long hair is hanging in a loose plate which hangs over one shoulder.

“What’s wrong? Are you ill?”

Sadie nods and I offer her a small smile. “Do you need anything?” I ask softly. Sadie looks around before shaking her head.

“I’m sorry, I tried to warn you, I don’t date.” But when she looks up at me there is disappointment in her eyes and I can’t help thinking that there is more than this being a one-off illness.

As I open my mouth to reply I notice that her flushed cheeks quickly fade, and she loses what little colour she has on her face.

“Sadie? Are you okay?” I ask again as I reach out. I watch as Sadie nods before her legs buckle from underneath her. “Shit!” I catch her and lift her into my arms with ease.

“Sadie, look at me,” I demand as she shakes her head as if to clear it before leaning into my chest.

“I’m okay, I just haven’t eaten,” she says quietly. I sigh as I kick her front door closed and walk through to the lounge.

“When was the last time you ate?” I ask sitting on the sofa whilst keeping her in my arms, relieved that she isn’t fighting me as I’m not sure I would be able to let her go right now. She leans her head against my chest as I brush some hair from her face.

“Thursday at lunch,” she whispers.

“That was two days ago! Why the hell haven’t you been eating?” I demand. Sadie looks up and tries to pull out of my arms but I hold on to her tight. If I can’t trust her to look after herself I will do it for her.

“If you eat, will you feel better?” I ask. She looks at me and nods. “Okay.” I stand and place Sadie on the sofa. “What do you want?”

She tries to stand up but I arch a brow and shake my head. “What do you want, sweetheart?” she sighs as she leans back into the sofa. I don’t miss the way her body relaxes a little.

“Tea and toast please,” she whispers.

“You need more than that,” I protest.

“It’s all I want,” she argues, causing me to sigh as I turn around and walk into the kitchen.

I quickly find everything I need and make two cups of tea and four slices of toast. The whole time I keep an eye on her and see her rubbing her temples with her eyes closed as she leans against the arm of the sofa.

As soon as I have the food I head back to the lounge and place it in front of her.
