Finally, he’d smacked her ass hard, kissed her lips fiercely, and told her to be good. She was to start dinner while he was away.

It was while she was bent over the sink, scrubbing the Yukon golds, that it came to her how to tell her father.

She’d shuffled her way out to the living room, drying her hands upon a hand towel as she went, her heart already beginning to gallop at what she was about to do.

Her fingers trembling slightly, her mouth suddenly dry, she’d tapped out the message:

Hi,

I want to tell you something, but I think you’ll try to talk me out of it, or be mad if I tell you over the phone, or in person. So, I’m sending this in the hopes that you’ll really think about this, and not be angry with me. Or with him.

Max and I are in a relationship. It’s serious, and getting more so by the day. He’s… well, he’s perfect for me. And I’m perfect for him :)

I know this is sudden, and a shock, and considering you two are best friends, the last thing I want to do is create friction between you two.

There doesn’t need to be. This is okay. In fact, it’s better than okay. It’s absolutely wonderful!

Please take some time to think about this, before responding. I won’t have my phone with me tonight, so I won’t be able to talk until tomorrow morning. I hope to talk to you then.

I love you, Daddy.

Me

Then she sent it, her stomach dropping as the ‘message sent’ text popped up on her screen.

She felt a little weird communicating with him about this using e-mail. It was definitely rare for her. But just firing off a text seemed to be not exactly sending the correct signals regarding how serious she was about all this.

Worse was having to lie to him about not being able to talk on the phone until the following morning. But she knew her father, and chances were good he’d try to barrage her with what-ifs and interrogate her until her head was spinning. She didn’t want any of that, and in truth, she felt she didn’t deserve any of that.

With any luck, if he did get pissed, he’d cool off, think it over, and see that this wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

And then, once he’d seen the truth of things, she’d be able to talk it over with him, smooth over any ruffled feathers, and make sure everyone was on the same page.

You really think it’s going to go anywhere near that smoothly? Why are you wasting time blowing smoke up your own ass? He’s not going to react well to this. At all.

She sighed to herself, setting her phone down on the counter, and returned to her potatoes.

The deed was done, and even if she had a vague sense of storm clouds gathering, she hoped it would be merely a passing shower, rather than a vicious gale.

She’d ‘broken the seal’ and though she couldn’t deny she was very worried how her father would react, at least she no longer had to worry about having to keep this part of her life from her father.

Falling for Max wasn’t wrong. There was nothing wrong or forbidden about it. She was a grown woman.

Her dad would understand that, in time.

Keep telling yourself that, idiot. You know this isn’t going to go down easy.

“Can’t turn back now,” she murmured, shaking her head.

Whatever was going to happen… she couldn’t stop it anymore.

She was just pulling the potatoes out of the oven when the front door to Max’s cabin opened, Max walking in slowly. The savory smell of rosemary, pepper, and garlic filled the air. She moaned with it, her mouth watering, her stomach growling almost immediately.

She looked back over her shoulder at Max. “Oh! I didn’t expect you’d be back so soon.” She spun around to greet him—then she saw the look on his face. It froze her in her tracks. “Jesus, what’s wrong?”

“Just had a, uh, unexpected phone call,” Max said, scratching his chin. “It was from your dad.”
