The strength of that square jaw.
The muscles of his massive shoulders. They went onforever.
Looking upon him was to gaze upon a figure of immense power.
Danger.
Maleness.
His draw had been magnetic while at the same time she’d had a visceral need to get away from him when he’d confronted her at the auction.
But was it because she wasafraidof him?
Or because of something very,verydifferent indeed?
She feared it was because her body needed him.
This male, which she’d never so much as spoken a single word to before.
And yet her body responded, as if finding its long lost twin, as if finding the missing piece it was always yearning for.
He’s not even human for God’s sake!
But it was true.
Agent or not, whether she wanted it to be or not, didn’t change the reality of it.
But she wasn’t going to succumb to… whatever it was that was happening to her.

The first days at the Academy came back to her then at Richmond, Virginia.
The words of her instructor, Instructor Tallis, a man who seemed to beliterallymade of steel.
Had she ever seen the man so much assmile? Even once?
In the weeks she’d been there, he’d shared his words well though, often striding down their lines during calisthenics, or while supervising weapons training, his deep baritone ringing out, his clipped, gravelly cadence unmistakable.
“The FMB does what must be done. If hard men and hard women don’t do the unpleasant things. The hard things. Even the cruel things. Then our society will collapse.
Agents of the FMB—you are literally the last thing standing between civilization and chaos.
We are the bridge, and we’re the shield. We’re the sentinel. The watch. The guardians.
We’re all of them. We do what must be done.
Because it’s our job. It’s our calling. It’s our duty.
Our solemn oath.”
She sipped from her wine again, the words ringing in her head, the image clear of the clench of muscle at the corner of Tallis’ jaw as he’d barked those words.
