But Dmitri didn’t answer, shutting the door behind him, his big palm spread upon the wood. He kept it there for a moment before turning to face her, his brawny arms crossing over his chest. “I want you to tell me something, Agent Masterson, and I want the truth.”

“Okay…” She didn’t like the way her mouth had gone suddenly dry, even as her bare nipples had pebbled into diamond-hard points. “Is there something wrong?”

Her face heated as his gaze dropped to her breasts for just the briefest of moments. Then he locked eyes with hers again, his jaw firm, voice tight. “There’s been… a death. On my lands.”

“Oh… oh no. What… who?”

Of all the things Stacy expected Dmitri to say, what he asked her then was something she would never have imagined. Not in a million years.

“What do you know about the interaction between wolves… and vampires?”

CHAPTER18

Dmitri

He almost burst out in macabre, bitter laughter as Stacy’s mouth dropped open like a trap door. “Uh, I’m sorry… what?”

Stalking closer into the bedroom, he couldn’t help but drink in the alluring sight of the agent in nothing but a couple of towels, her large, round breasts entirely exposed, the rose nipples so hard, he was certain they’d be able to etch glass. He longed to taste them, to run his tongue up and down those tight points until she was moaning the name of her alpha.

Not now.

But even being in the same room with her was instantly… difficult. He’d come there to talk, to find out what might be going on, and all he could think about was tearing those cursed towels from that much too gorgeous body and taking her all over again.

“What do you know? Does the FMB have its own division who deals with them? With our enemy?”

“What enemy?” She backed up until her legs pressed to the side of the bed. She wrapped her arms about her breasts, concealing those mouth-watering nipples.

He’d need to teach her a lesson about covering herself up in his presence. But there was no time for that at the moment.

For a long beat, he simply stood there, staring into her eyes. Was she lying? There wasn’t any deception in the liquid fathoms of her gaze.

“They really didn’t tell you?”

“Tell me what? Goddammit,wolfie, I can’t answer a question I don’t even fucking understand.”

Taking another step toward her, he lifted a finger in her direction. “Language like that is going to get you in hot water with me, omega. And quickly. I won’t allow it.”

“Go fuck yourself.”

With a second step, he was a breath away from the woman, looming over her. He was pleased to see her swallow hard, her lower lip beginning to tremble just a little. But he was also gratified to see she didn’t back down from him either.

The scent of lust, fear, and confused, conflicted need were all around her, and he took a deep draught of it. The Draw gave her courage, made her bold, even as it wore down her willpower to resist him.

Unfortunately, it was working on him just as relentlessly. He had to be on guard against its tendency to cloud a man’s judgment.

Determined to remain firm with her, he wrapped a hand about her throat, and she gasped, turning her face up to his.

“Put your hands behind your back—and keep them there until told otherwise. If you don’t, we can always cuff you up again…” He thrilled at her alacrity to obey even as her jaw tightened. “We’ll be addressing your little foul-mouthedretortshortly—but not now. Right now, I need your brain. And I demand your honesty. Got me, agent?”

“O-okay.” She sighed, but it was forced, as affected as her desperate need to fool him into thinking she wasn’t intimidated by his presence. “What is it you… want to know?”

Easing a thumb under the line of her jaw, he stroked the warm, tender flesh there, the steady thump of her pulse a pleasing beat against his touch. Her mouth came open at that, revealing her perfect white teeth, but her eyes remained on his.

Good.

“Sit down on the bed.” He tipped his head toward the mattress.

She complied, thankfully, her initial defiance seeming to desert her.
