Of course, there was no way that was true. Not really. Of course they were mortal, they were justmore.

Better.

Faster, stronger, meaner. And that made them very, verydangerous.

Which was where the FMB came in.

Dmitri’s suit was perfectly fitted, highlighting the breadth of his shoulders, the huge barrel chest, and the pleasingly narrow waist which only accentuated his great height and the dramatic power of his physique. He had a presence about him, and even she could tell he was the most powerful being in that room at that moment. As if to confirm her suspicions, he was the first to take a seat, even before the guards, his ease and unhurried manner a subtle signal all its own that this was a male in total charge of all he surveyed. The aura of the alphas was something that was well known among the agents, and it was both remarked upon, and a source of unease among some of them. Including her.

It was the sense that these beings were definitely not men, but in their own unique way they were the veryessenceof masculinity, an almost exaggerated, supernatural distillation of all it meant to be male, and virile, and formidable.

“Do you ever wonder what they’re saying?” Karen asked under her breath. “I mean, do they talk about her like she’s a cow at auction? Talk about the size of her tits, or something?”

“Jesus, Karen.” But it wasn’t as if Stacy had never wondered the same thing. How could she not?

The gathered men murmured among themselves, now and then one of them gesturing toward the dais, but other than that seemingly not even giving any indication that they were paying much attention at all to Lola Grantham, the ostensible reason they’d all gathered there that day.

Itshouldhave been Stacy’s first clue that there was something wrong.

Then those gray eyes slid over and fixed upon her—and Stacy’s heart nearly stopped in her chest.

Oh, sweet Jesus.

“Karen…”

Her supervisor’s voice was smooth, cool. “Ignore him, agent. He’s just getting the lay of the land. Nothing else.” Karen was obviously trying to keep her subordinate calm, her reassuring tone and well-rehearsed words not at all obscuring the fact her boss had instantly keyed in on what Stacy was feeling at that moment.

That told Stacy all she needed to know.

Danger.

“Whyis he looking at me…” But Stacy couldn’t even finish the sentence, a sudden heat at her neck suffusing her entire body, her lungs aching with each breath, her throat uncomfortably tight. A powerful rush of both nausea and almost elation came upon her then, and terror sunk deep in the pit of her belly. Worst of all, a seething heaviness had settled between her thighs, her panties already soaked through.

“Holyshit, what’s happening?”

“Easy, Stacy. Easy now.” Karen grasped her shoulder, giving her a gentle squeeze. “Just relax. Take a breath.”

“Yeah… yeah, okay. I just… I don’t know what’s fucking going on with me.” She looked up at Karen, finding her boss’s gaze fixed upon her, eyes narrowed just the slightest bit.

Karen’s lips were a thin line. “Are you gonna be sick, agent?”

“Not… exactly,” Stacy whispered, gripping her thighs through her slacks as if trying to ground herself, the insane urge to jump up and run out of the room so powerful she had to hold herself down in her chair.

Then she made the mistake of meeting Dmitri’s gaze, and found he was still staring at her.

The heat inside her flared once more, her cunt, and her nipples, and her lips seeming to pulse in time with her rapid heartbeat.

This can’t be happening. This is not happening!

But sheknew.

It had to be a mistake, and yet it was undeniable—and there was no way she’d ever tell anyone. With Herculean effort, she leaned back in her chair, trying desperately to project an air of casualness and ease. Forcing herself to look away, she practiced her breathing.

Inhale through your nostrils. Exhale through your mouth. Repeat. You can do this, agent. Just get through this.

Even so, with every second the realization was echoing in her mind, her entire being reeling with the implications of it, what might happen if she letanyoneknow what it was she was feeling in that moment.

And then she heard the words, and a chill ran down her spine.
