“Ah, right,” he muttered, taking her hand and leading her from the room. “Do you remember how many islands you recommended and where they were?”

“Uh…I think four or five. Why?”

“Emily just told me speedboats have been showing up here.”

“One zipped by us when we arrived.”

“I know. It had a black streak running along the side,” he remarked as they entered the bedroom. “I wish I’d paid more attention.”

“Do you have any idea what’s going on?”

“From what Emily just told me, they started appearing at the beach about the time you left L.A. If Conchello has been operating on an island you suggested, and he knows you’re down here, he might have decided to move house.”

“Oh, right.”

“I would if I were him.”

“But do you honestly think he’s moving to this island right under your nose?”

“It looks like he might be, but he doesn’t know I’m here, or anything about me.”

“But that’s crazy,” she exclaimed. “I can’t believe it.”

“One thing I’ve learned, Elizabeth, coincidences happen all the time.”

“Yes, they do,” she murmured, moving closer to him and wrapping her arms around his neck. “Irony is everywhere. With all the charters that can be found down here, I ended up with you, and look at us now. Lo and behold, I’m DEA undercover, and you’re with…what was it you said?”

He grinned.

“I was in the Navy.”

“You’re no fun,” she retorted, punching his chest.

“Be careful, little girl.”

“I’m no little girl.”

“The hell you’re not. What do you weigh?”

“Never mind that. You said you were going to offer me a mental break.”

“Take off your clothes and lie on your stomach.”

“Wow, that was romantic,” she quipped as he moved away and lowered the shades.

“Just do it.”

Peeling off her clothes as Scott disappeared into the bathroom, Elizabeth climbed on the bed and sank into the comfortable mattress. Closing her eyes, she thought about his theory. As ironic as it was, it made sense.

“Now that’s a lovely sight,” he declared, interrupting her pondering as he straddled her back.

“I was just thinking about Conchello.”

“As of this moment, no conversation about anything related to him, and you’ll do as you’re told. If you don’t,” he continued, sliding a sleep mask over her head, “I’ll spank you—hard—is that clear?”

“Yes, Captain,” she murmured breathlessly, a thrill rippling through her body.

An aromatic liquid spilled across her shoulders.
