“Sometimes they are,” she murmured, “but the days are usually okay. It’s only the nights that can be rough.”

“When you’re ready, I want to hear about this, and if you find yourself in trouble I want you to call,” he added sternly. “Are we clear?”

“Yes, Sir,” she said with a wink. “We’re clear.”

“So sassy! Come on, I’ll get youback to your car.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

During the drive to The Barnyard, Ellie peppered Noah with endless questions about programming the foals. But as he turned into the parking area they found it packed with cars.

“The brunch crowd,” he remarked. “Where’s your car?”

“At the far end close to the woods. Noah, is riding tough to master?”

It was the question he’d been hoping for.

“Everyone’s different, but it’s like anything,” he began, moving slowly through the busy lot. “If you have the grit and you really want to do it, you will. But be warned, riding and horses can be crazy addictive.”

“I’m sure. I was only around them for a few minutes and I can’t wait to see them again. There’s my car,” she said abruptly, pointing through the windshield. “That white SUV.”

Rolling to a stop, he discovered her car was a new Mercedes.

“It sounds like you’ve already caught the bug,” he remarked, wondering why he was surprised she was in such an expensive vehicle. Her father owned the huge lumber yard across the river, and she lived in a luxurious estate above the lake.

“Apparently,” she said with a laugh, “though I’m not surprised. I’ve often thought about learning how to ride. I guess I just never got around to it. ”

“And now you want to see how it feels to actually sit in the saddle.”

“Yes, I would, in fact I can’t wait, though, to be honest I’m a bit scared.”

“That’s natural, but I have the perfect mare for you. Her name’s Candy because she’s so sweet and she’s totally bombproof. If you want to give it a try I’ll have some time tomorrow afternoon. Can you make it around two-o’clock?”

“Yes, absolutely,” she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. “I’ll be there with bells on.”

The comment made him chuckle, and though he wished they could sit and talk for a while, he needed to get back. After exchanging phone numbers, he climbed from the truck and walked around to open her door.

“You’re such a gentleman,” she remarked as he took her hand and she stepped down.

“Not always,” he quipped with a wink.

“I certainly hope not!” she retorted, then started giggling.

He paused, and lowering his lips to her ear, he whispered. “Be careful what you wish for.” As he pulled back, she looked up at him with mischief in her eyes.

“Can I ask you something?” she murmured, tilting her head to the side.

“Ah, Ellie, you did nothing but ask me questions all the way over here.”

“This is different.”

“Okay, go ahead.”

“Are you the guy Alan calls Stallion?”

“How the heck did you hear about that?”

“It is you?”
