“Sounds like he made quite an impression,” her father remarked, raising his eyebrows.

“I guess he did, and if I’m not around as much as usual, you don’t have to worry. I’ll be there sketching.”

“Good, I’m glad to hear it. Your mother always said horses are good for the soul. Maybe you should learn to ride.”

“Noah has offered to put me on a horse, and I can’t wait…but dad, I must ask you…” she began, lowering her voice and settling into a chair in front of his desk, “did you hear the noises last night?”

“You’ve asked me that before, and no, I still haven’t heard anything. Mind you, I’ve been sleeping so soundly I doubt I’d hear anything. It’s probably just the new construction settling.”

“I swear something’s going on,” she mumbled. “I just know it.”

“What do you know?”

Startled by the unexpected sound of Bethany’s voice, Ellie jumped to her feet and spun around.

“Why do you have to creep up on me?” she demanded. “Can’t I have a private conversation with my father in peace?”

“I’m sorry, Eleanor, I didn’t mean to scare you, and I didn’t creep up on you. The door was open,” Bethany replied, smiling as she spoke. “If you want privacy, you should make sure it’s closed.”

“Dad, I’ll see you later,” Ellie muttered, not wanting to be around Bethany a second longer than necessary. “I’m going up to my room for a little while, then back to my studio.”

“I picked up a box of Matilda’s cookies and cakes if you want one,” Bethany suggested. “She even had some of those delicious Lamingtons left. They’re in the kitchen. Help yourself.”

“Thanks, but I just had a big breakfast,” Ellie replied as she moved around the desk and pecked her father on the cheek. “Dad, please take it easy,” she said softly. “I worry about you.”

“I’m fine honey. We’ll talk more soon.”

As she walked through the office and into the hall, she heard the door being closed behind her. A wave of worry laced with anger rippled through her body. She was sure Bethany had an agenda, and pausing her step, she looked back.

“I don’t know what you’re up to, Bethany,” she muttered under her breath, “but I’m going to find out.”

CHAPTER TEN

Throughout Noah’s busy day, Ellie lingered in the forefront of his mind. She was spoiled and sassy, but smart and sexy, and around the foals she’d been soft and sweet. Then there was her fervent response to his kiss.

It was an intoxicating combination and he couldn’t wait to see her again.

Now standing under the shower washing off the dust and dirt, an image unexpectedly flashed through his mind. He was jerking her over his knee, baring her backside, and with enormous satisfaction, watching her skin turn red under the slaps of his hand. As she squirmed, he glimpsed her glistening pussy peeking between her legs inviting his touch, and hungering for his cock.

Urgently wrapping his fingers around his stiffening shaft, he closed his eyes and pictured her on his bed resting on her elbows and knees with her crimson ass high in the air. Stroking his hardness, he imagined spanking her plump, red cheeks as he vigorously thrust in and out of her channel.

He never wanted the fantasy to end, but a surge of erotic energy pulsed through his loins, and a powerful orgasm abruptly shuddered through his body. Groaning loudly, he surrendered to the powerful spasms, then leaned against the wall and let out a heavy, satisfied sigh.

Long seconds ticked by as he savored the residual tingling in his limbs, then slowly stepping from the stall, he toweled himself dry.

He wanted to talk to her.

Even more, he wanted to see her again.

She’d be there the following afternoon.

If things went well he’d invite her to stay for dinner…then let the night play out…and hopefully they’d end up between the sheets.

But as he dressed it occurred to him he might be expecting too much, too soon.

“What do you think, Sherlock,” he asked, glancing down at his terrier. The little dog barked, then twirled in excited circles. “You’re right, she’s got my head spinnin’,” Noah remarked with a grin.

Ambling into the kitchen, he filled Sherlock’s bowl with kibble, then opened the refrigerator, grabbed a beer, and pulled out a diced chicken breast marinading in a spicy barbecue sauce. It was always delicious and only took a short time to cook. After heating up some Jasmine rice, he placed the chicken on top, pulled his phone from his pocket, laid it on the coffee table, then settled on the couch and turned on the television.
