“I’m sure she didn’t mean it, just words said in the heat of the moment. Regardless, as I said, David found a couple of disturbing things in the house and—.”

“What things?” she asked, interrupting him.

“Ask him to show you, but please, Ellie, I don’t know what’s going on, and I’m worried about your safety.”

“Fine, then I’ll move into the cabin. It’s virtually invisible behind those trees. Besides, I’ve just started a new canvas, and you know how I don’t stop until late. Do you really want me driving across the bridge at two-o’clock in the morning?” she demanded, then softening her voice, she added, “Dad, for the record, I’m worried about you too, especially your relationship with her. What’s she after?”

“We’ve had this conversation. She has her own money, and plenty of it. She doesn’t need mine. Regardless of what you might think, she’s only here to help oversee the renovations.”

“I still think she’s up to something.”

“Sweetheart, I appreciate your concern, I do, but she’s no threat.

“When will you be back?”

“I’m not sure. A few days, maybe a week. Please stay in touch, and leave your phone on.”

“So—you’re okay with me in the cabin?”

“For the moment. At least David is around.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too, honey.”

The call ended, and as Ellie stared at the phone, her father’s comment echoed through her head.

David Graham has come across some things I find worrying.

“I have to know what he found,” she mumbled, starting up her car and rolling out of the parking lot. But driving down the street, she abruptly remembered Noah’s message and hastily called him back.

“Hey, Ellie. Candy says hello. I’m with her right now in the paddock.”

The image of the sweet grey mare and the handsome cowboy in the field immediately settled her nerves.

“I wish I was there with you,” she said with a sigh.

“Are you okay?”

“Aside from being rescued from The Bitch From Hell by Clint Kincaid and Devlin Pike, I’m great.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’ll tell you when I see you next, but the good news is, I’m just leaving Kincaid’s Western Wear. I met Tiffany and she was a great help. My car is full of boxes and shopping bags.”

“I’ll just bet it is,” he remarked with a smile in his voice. “Ellie, If you don’t have any other plans tonight, I’d like to take you to the Barnyard. I’m cravin’ their spicy fries and a burger.”

She paused, recalling her conversation with David Graham about the source of the odd sounds.

“Ellie? Are you there?”

“Yes, I’m here, sorry, I was distracted for a second. There’s nothing I’d like better,” she replied, finding the offer far more appealing than a talk with David.

“Great, I’ll pick you up around seven.”

“Pick me up?”
