“Kayleigh?”

“Oh, yeah…Kayleigh. I just remembered that one outright. Some words you’ve just gotta make a little more effort,” she said.

“OK.”

“Finn and Caitlin,” she said. “Shark and Jenner.” He laughed. “I’m not sure if they spell it the same way, but that’s not part of this quiz, is it?”

“Nope. Carry on…you’re getting there.”

“Boots and Celeste.” She pointed to her boots and said, “Boots. Celeste is a video game that kids play.”

Ah yes…a kid’s game. You’d know that.

“So, who’s left?” he asked.

“Just Collin and Ciara,” she said. “Collin’s the same name as one of my neighbors and Ciara is a name like Kayleigh. I repeat names I can’t associate with anything a few times and concentrate on remembering them.”

“Ten out of ten,” Cruz said.

“Not quite,” she said. “I forgot Edie and whatshisname?” she said.

“Whatshisname? Something like smooth cruiser,” he said.

“Smooth cruiser? Yeah, I kinda like that one. I think I will be able to remember who I’m with now.”

Who you’re with? Hmm…if only. Fuck, some people shouldn’t be married, so guys like me get a chance with the good ones.

Eden started mingling with the other old ladies who were standing in a group. She seemed to be having a good time…like old friends…so Cruz pulled out his phone and looked up Grayson Hugh. He found the lyrics to the man’s biggest hit,Talk It Over,to see if he could fathom what had made her so sad.

He knew now that something had happened to her when he saw the words, “Love walks out the door.” He wondered who walked out the door…and if she was still married with a son, what the hell was going on?

She wandered back to the old ladies again. It seemed like Jessie was already telling her next story.

The hit on his back almost sent his phone flying. “Hey, man, how’s it hanging?”

“Hit me any harder and my arm will be hanging off my fucking shoulder,” Cruz said to Mack.

Mack wasn’t a member of an MC now. He was a good friend of Dax Marshall, the National President of all the Skulls chapters.

“I didn’t know you were riding with us this time,” Cruz said.

“I picked up that beauty.” He nodded towards the new, orange pearl painted CVO Road Glide Limited. “Riding it back to the Bay.” Mack lived in San Francisco.

“Pussy,” Cruz said.

“The color?” Cruz nodded. “It was her choice.” He nodded to his old lady, who was in the middle of the other women flinging her arms around. She was telling them a story and usually got very animated.

“So that’s your new old lady?” Mack asked as he nodded towards Eden.

“Nah, man…just giving her a lift,” Cruz said.

“Bit of a stunner,” Mack said.

“Yeah, but she's married. She just wants a ride to Lake Charles.”

Mack laughed. “And she decided to tag along with this lot?”

“Yeah, I don’t really know what’s going on with her…yet.”
