“Hey guys,we’re going to head to the Basin for a swamp tour,” Cruz told the group as they were digging into their food and drinks.

“Cool,” Finn said. “I’ve never done that.” Cruz frowned and hoped Eden didn’t see him shake his head. “But I gotta get to Lake Charles early enough to rest up for tomorrow,” Finn added.

Cruz mouthed, “Thanks, man,” and a whole lot of eyebrows shot up.

“Got a sec?” Mack said to Cruz.

“Yeah, sure.”

Mack walked him away from the group, leaving Eden standing where she was. When they were out of earshot, he said, “She’s married, man. Don’t fucking go there.”

“She’s not.”

“You told me she was…and now she’s not?”

“I was wrong. She was talking to her brother-in-law. She’s split with her old man. He sounds like a real asshole too.”

“You sure?”

“Sure, I’m sure.”

“OK then.” Mack handed Cruz the key fob to his bike.

“What’s this?”

“My key. Swap.”

“Really? I thought it was new,” Cruz said.

“It is. Bring it back in one piece or I’ll kill ya. I saw how Eden got off your shitter…”

“Shitter?”

“You’ll be calling it that after you ride mine. Eden needs a little luxury, don’t you think?” Cruz nodded in agreement to that. Mack was still holding out his hand. “Last chance or the offer’s off.” Cruz handed his key to Mack. “Besides, it’ll give my eyes a rest from that fucking color.” He laughed and Cruz did too.

“He did that?”Eden was looking at Mack while he was telling his old lady what he’d just done.

Eden had never met so many genuinely nice people in her life. She’d always mixed with people who had money, prestige, and anything that that could get them. She had never realized how shallow most of those people really were, until the chips were down. When Grant had walked out of her life, with a young bimbo on his arm…all of herfriendshad followed. She hadn’t realized at the time that she’d been living his life…not hers.

“He did,” Cruz told her. “He thought you might enjoy a little comfort before the swamp witch takes you.” She slapped him on the arm. “I think we should leave soon. To make sure we don’t miss our booking.”

Cruz had called through to the tour company and they had the option of a sedate tour boat or an airboat. Eden had chosen the airboat, and Cruz was happy about that.

Cruz and Eden hurried through their food, which the nomads had once again supplied. Taco Bell for all of them. There was so much food it looked like the Taco Bell Lafayette restaurant would need to restock their premises.

Eden thanked Mack and she waved goodbye as Cruz drove her off to Atchafalaya on a bike that felt like the cars she was used to riding around in back home. It was pure luxury.

“What do you think about this?” Cruz asked her.

“I love the color,” she said.

“Really?”

“No…it’s terrible, but man, is it ever comfortable. I could go to sleep back here.”

“Yeah, me too,” he said.
