Brian called Jimmy back:

“What!” Jimmy wasn’t even trying to be civil. He wanted Cruz, and he was finally going to get him.

“They’re headingEaston I-10,” Brian told him.

Jimmy ended the call without answering.

Brian screwed his face up as he looked at the phone, then he smiled. You can spend the rest of the day in the fucking city, Jimmy. Cruz’ll be dead before you even find somewhere to park.Brian patted his gun inside his jacket and started his Harley.

Jimmy headed for I-10 in his pickup…smoking up the tires as he pulled out of his yard.It won’t be long now, fucker. You’ll finally pay for what you did to my baby.

Brian slipped the cell phone into his vest and started his Dyna Wide Glide, then accelerated towards I-10 to head in the opposite direction to Jimmy. He knew he’d have to go some to catch the Skulls and Jokers as he sped down the road. He was weaving in and out of the traffic when he heard the siren. He looked back.Fuck. He was carrying an unregistered gun…he couldn’t be caught. His heart was pumping as he turned down the first road and then another, backtracking as fast as he could before he spotted a couple of U-Hauls parked outside of a house where people were shifting their belongings. He shut down his engine and coasted in between them. Seconds later the cop car flew past. He took his jacket off, along with the gun, and bundled it up and into his saddlebag. He rolled his bike back out on the road and went in the other direction.

He hoped like hell that the cop didn’t get his number. Brian wouldn’t know unless the cop saw him again, and he didn’t intend sitting around waiting. He rode back towards I-10 keeping well within the speed limit.

Cruz had a good head-start on him now, but Brian was convinced, with a group like that, they’d be heading cross-country. With their old ladies onboard, he knew he’d probably make better ground and would catch them by nightfall.

“You fucking asshole!”

“Calm down, Jimmy. You know I wouldn’t do that,” Brian said.

“I heard perfectly well, Brian. There’s no way you say West, and I hear East.”

“Like I said, Jimmy. I’m sorry if I…”

“If! There’s no fucking ‘ifs’ about it. You told me East. You’re not going to talk your way out of it so shut the fuck up and tell me where the fuck you are. Now!”

“I headed West, like I thought…”

“No, no, no, Brian. You’re already on slippery ground, don’t take a skid. You fucked with me, and you will NEVER do that again. Do. You. Understand?”

“Yeah, sure, Jimmy. Sorry.” Jimmy waited and Brian took that as his cue to continue. “I stopped at Sorrento…” He lied. He’d already passed Sorrento and was parked under an overpass.

“Sorrento! Fuck!”

“I haven’t seen them yet, but I think they might be headed to Baton Rouge.” Brian was hoping like hell they weren’t all eating waffles in Sorrento while he’d gone sailing by. “That’s where I’m going. It seems the likely place.”

“They could be any fucking where by now,” Jimmy said. “What took you so long? Why aren’t you on their tails already?”

“I had a cop chase me.”

“Ah, fuck.” Jimmy let out a sigh. “Call me at your next stop and you’d better have a better story, because all the shit you told me so far today has got my fucking blood boiling.”

“Yeah, OK, Jimmy. I really am…”

Jimmy ended the call. He opened his wallet and thumbed through the bills, before checking to see he had his credit card. He threw it on the passenger seat and turned his truck around. He was miles behind Brian, who was who-knows-how-far behind Cruz and the Skulls/Jokers…if he was even on the right route. If ya need something done ya gotta do it yourself.

Once Jimmy was heading West on I-10, he turned on heavy metal music to calm his nerves. Like that was going to help.

Brian was still parked up, wondering why he’d called Jimmy in the first place.I could have done this myself. I only told him for you, Wendy. Fuck!

Once he got underway again he stepped up his pace, traveling mostly at 90. He was about to turn off at Burnside thinking that maybe he’d missed them by not stopping at Sorrento. He didn’t want to risk missing them, but he decided he didn’t have time to check and would trust his luck. As he crested the rise, he saw them up ahead.Yes!

They were sticking to the limit.Fuck, I didn’t think I’d catch them this fast. They ride like fucking girls. He slowed his pace and settled in behind them.I hope they turn off. Go on, turn off, ya fuckers. All the food signs he’d seen were making him hungry. While he’d been thinking about Taco Bell, he hadn’t realized that he closed on them a little too fast. He scoffed…Why would they wonder about another Harley? I’ve passed a few already. He hadn’t realized until just then how anxious he was really feeling.
