“Hey, there is room for both of us, but if you need more space, I’m happy to sleep on the ground, or outside. I’m easy.”

“No, no…” she said, “I don’t want to put you out.”

“And I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable…about anything, OK?”

They agreed to try two-up, and if either couldn’t sleep Cruz would join the nomads. She was more worried about what might happen once they’d both had a few beers if she’d lose her inhibitions. She couldn’t let that happen no matter what.

“What’s on your mind, Cruz?”Eden asked him.

“You,” he told her.

“With that look, I’m not sure I’m happy about being on your mind right now,” she said. He’d looked pensive.

“Sorry…I was thinking about the conversation we had earlier when we were looking at Brian’s bike. What you’d said.”

She was wondering once again what it was that she’d said that had mattered so much. She was about to ask when they heard Kimber shout, “Food’s ready.”

“Is it for real this time?” Eden asked.

“I’ll check if Jigsaw and Razor are rolling around on the ground again.” He got off the airbed and she crawled out of the tent behind him.

She’d forgotten all about the conversation with Brian and was wondering how she was going to keep her hands off Cruz all night.

TAKING IT SLOW

When Brian had broughthis bike into the campground earlier, Cruz had walked over to check it out. It looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place where he’d seen it before. To most people it would have looked like just another Harley, but Cruz had an eye for bikes. He customized them for a living.

Brian was looking inside his saddlebags.

“Hey, man,” Cruz said. “Nice bike.”

“Yeah, I’m happy with it,” Brian said. “Had it since new.”

“So that’s about a 2010?” Cruz said.

“You know your bikes. 2010 Dyna Wide Glide.”

“I see you’ve done some customizing on it.”

“Not me. The shop I bought it from had added some touches before I picked it up. It’s the same now as the day it left the shop. Haven’t needed to touch a thing since. It still rides like new.”

“Sure…yeah, they’re a good model,” Cruz said. “I’ve customized a few of these.”

“You do that?” Brian asked.

“Yep…for a living.”

“Oh wow. Maybe I should get you to dress this one up a little more.”

“Nah, she looks pretty good as is,” Cruz told him.

“It’s been great on the trip so far. This is the first really big trip I’ve ever done.”

Eden was standing beside Cruz now. Brian looked at her and smiled.
