Cruz stood for quite some time after that, wondering just what was going on. Brian didn't seem like he was out to cause trouble. Maybe this time, Cruz had misread someone’s character.

When Cruz eventually climbed back into his tent, Eden was sitting up on the end of the bed.

It took him by surprise. He thought she would have been asleep. “What’s up, babe?”

“I felt you weren't there and wondered where you’d gone.”

“You missed me already?” he said.

“I did,” she told him.

He’d already forgotten about Brian.

“How did you sleep, man?”Cruz asked Brian the next morning.

“Not too bad…eventually,” he said.

“Yeah, me too.”

“If I can make it to the end of the day, I might try some of that weed this evening. I can’t go for too many sleepless nights and ride all day. I’ll end up falling off my bike,” Brian said.

“The offer’s always there,” Cruz said. He helped Eden out of the tent and Brian started to dismantle his own.

When Cruz was gone, Brian pulled his tent to the ground angrily.Three fucking years I wanted to kill him, and it might be my fault. No wonder I can’t fucking sleep.

Jimmy was alreadyin Abilene when Brian called. “Where the fuck have you been?”

“I couldn’t get reception,” Brian told him.

“That’s the last fucking lie you tell me! You must think I’m fucking stupid.”

“No, Jimmy, I…”

“Where are you?” Jimmy asked.

“I’ve got to tell you something, Jimmy,” Brian said.

“Yeah, like where the fuck you are.”

“It wasn’t Cruz’s fault.”

“The fuck it wasn’t!”

“No, Jimmy, it really wasn’t. It was a genuine accident caused by an electrical fault.”

“Was Cruz riding the bike?” Jimmy asked.

“Yeah, of course…you know that,” Brian said.

“Did Wendy die?”

“Yes, Jimmy, but…”

“Cruz killed Wendy, and you’d better fucking tell me where the fuck you are.”
