Brian looked up the website of the campground they’d stayed at and found the number.

“Hello, Braeside Campground, Kelly speaking. How can I help you?”

“Hi, Kelly. It’s Brian James.” Wendy hadn’t changed her name to James when she’d married Brian, keeping her maiden name of Hanson. “I was staying last night with the bikers.”

“Oh, OK. Yes, how can I help?” Kelly said.

Brian could tell she didn’t know who he was, so he said, “I left earlier than the others today. I was in the tent closest to your office.”

“Yes, I do remember you. Nice bike,” she said.

“Thanks, Kelly. So, what’s happened is, I left earlier than the others to book places on the way and I’ve lost my phone. I’ve borrowed one to call you.”

“OK.”

“And I don’t have my friends’ numbers to call them, so could you look up the number of the person who booked, and I will call him to let them all know where I am?”

“Sure. Just a minute,” she said. “OK, here it is. You have a pen?”

“Yes, thanks,” he told her.

“So, it was Mr. Trahan who made the booking.”

Jimmy frowned and Brian shrugged his shoulders. She gave Brian the number and he thanked her and ended the call.

“Who is Mr. Trahan?” Jimmy asked.

“I haven’t got a clue,” Brian told him. “I only knew them by their club names. It could be anyone.”

“Well, ring the fucking number and find out where they are,” Jimmy said.

“What do I tell them about leaving without them?” Brian asked.

“That you went out to buy something thinking they would still be there when you got back.” Brian thought about that for a few minutes, before Jimmy said, “Get a fucking move on.”

“It’s got to sound legit,” Brian said. “I’ll tell them it was for cigarettes. Cruz knew I was trying to give up.” He called the number and Frasier “Razor” Trahan answered.

“Yeah?”

Brian thought he recognized the voice as Razor’s, but he wasn’t quite sure. He had no option but to take a stab at it when he said, “Hey, Razor, it’s Brian.” He heard Razor sigh, but he didn’t say anything. “I came back after buying cigs and you were all gone.”

“And you only just realized that?” Razor said.

Brian laughed as if it were a joke. “Nah, man. I thought I’d be able to catch back up with y’all by riding faster but…well, I’m parked at the side of the road in Abilene, and I’d really like to hook back up with y’all before we head to Amarillo. Where y’at?”

“A sec,” Razor said.

Brian had the phone on speaker and Jimmy was listening in. They could hear Razor talking to the others, and there were muted voices in the background before Razor said, “We’ll be at the Parklands RV Resort later today.”

“Thanks, man. Look forward to catching up again.”

Razor ended the call, and Brian looked at Jimmy.Fuck…Jimmy doesn’t need me anymore. In a panic Brian said, “I can work a diversion for you to get Cruz away from the others if you like.”

“How the fuck will you do that?” Jimmy asked.

“He likes me.”

“Sure,” Jimmy scoffed.
