Brian sent the image through to Jimmy. Beck actually looked quite placid in the photo Jace had sent him. He hoped she would be safe.

“I’ve gotsomething to tell you, Edie. I don’t want to keep any secrets from you, but before I do that, I need to explain that you will be 100% safe with whatever we decide to do to resolve the problem we’ve got.”
“Safe? What are you saying?” she asked. “Am I in danger?”
“No, not you…me. Brian has told me that Wendy’s father has been following us on this trip,” Cruz said.
“Why would he do that?”
“He wants to kill me.”
Cruz could see the look of panic on her face, but before he could tell her more, she said, “He wants to kill you? Why would anyone want to do that?”
“Because he thinks I was responsible for his daughter’s death,” Cruz said.
“But you weren’t. Brian knows that. Why doesn’t he tell Jimmy?”
“Jimmy is not like the people you’ve known in your life. He’s believed for three years it was my fault and nothing can change that.”
“But Brian changed when he found out what had happened.”
“Jimmy’s not Brian.”
“Can you talk to him? Tell him what happened?”
“No, no one can talk to Jimmy. Jimmy doesn’t listen to anyone. He will think we’re lying, and he’s a guy who believes his own lies, so it’s pointless.”
“How do you know what he’s like? Maybe he will listen,” she said.
“Brian has told us a lot about him. But even his action of pursuing me across the country speaks to that as well.”
“But…”
“No, I’m sorry, Edie…he’s a dead-end road. But there is more to what I want to tell you.”
“OK.” She looked anything but OK. She looked terrified. Cruz had expected that, but he’d promised her, and himself, that he would always be honest and open with her. There would be no secrets. They both knew the importance of trust. Without it they had nothing…no one did.
“So, what I’m about to tell you could scare you but it’s not going to happen. It will never happen,” he said.
“Could scare me? I’m already shitting myself…and there’s more?”
“Yeah, sorry…but trust me. You don’t need to be concerned. I’m only telling you all of this because it’s what we…me and the others…will be doing, not anything you will be involved with.”
“Shoot.”
Cruz actually smiled at that. Shooting was the way this whole problem was going to be resolved.
“He wants to kidnap you…”
Eden gasped and threw her hand over her mouth.
