She looked up at him slowly and he was grinning. “Only joking” he said. She let out the breath she’d been holding. “I really do need a good sleep before tomorrow.” He picked up his pack and placed it on the floor beside the other bed.

“I hope this restaurant isn’t too dressy,” she said. “I didn’t bring many clothes.”

Cruz turned his palms out and looked down at what he was wearing, saying, “Do you think the guy downstairs would have recommended the Ritz to me?”

“I’m sure where we’re going will be just as nice,” she said.

“You’ve been?” She raised an eyebrow. “To the Ritz?”

She blushed again. “Yes.” Then she quickly added, “I’m looking forward to our meal. I’m famished.”

He wondered what the hell it was about this woman. Someone who dines at the best restaurants and rides with a random biker.“Mmm…”

IF ONLY HE KNEW

“So,where the fuck did he go?” Jimmy asked Brian.

“I don’t know. By the time I’d turned around he had already driven off. He could've gone anywhere so I decided to visit Wendy.”

Brian and Jimmy were standing in front of Wendy’s headstone. It was three years ago to the day that she had died. They stood in silence for a while before Jimmy said, “We’ll ride around and see if we can find him. I’ll talk to the boys, and they can do a scout around the city too. He must be staying somewhere… Probably at the fucking Jokers.”

“Yeah, sure, Jimmy. If he’s here today, he’s probably in town for a while. I know some of the boys who hang out at the Jokers. I can ask if he’s been there.”

In the past three years Brian had asked the Jokers, many times, whether they had seen or heard of Cruz, and all he ever got was a “No.” Having not seen him around town in all that time, he assumed they weren’t lying when they told him Cruz had moved out of state. He wasn’t so sure they were telling the truth when they said they didn’t know where he had gone though.

He pulled out his phone while Jimmy was still standing there, and said, “Cruz is back in town. I want all eyes and ears out. He’s not going to leave this time unless it’s in a box.” He slid his phone back in his pocket and Jimmy gave him a nod before walking over to his pickup.

“Keep me posted,” Jimmy said.

“Sure, man.” Brian watched Jimmy drive away then and got on his bike and rode out of the cemetery ready to hunt down the man who had killed his wife.

* * *

Eden and Cruzstayed out a little later than Cruz had originally intended, but he wasn’t feeling quite as tired as he thought earlier. He was sure it had everything to do with who he was with.

The meal at the Chinese restaurant was as good as James had told them. They’d had one beer each…it was all Cruz felt like, after drinking too much earlier in the week with the Jokers. He thought that Eden would’ve been more of a champagne-type girl, but when she closed her eyes at the first sip of her ice-cold Bud and let it out a sexy “mmm…” he knew there was a lot more to this girl than appearances…and he was looking forward to getting to know her more. Much, much more, if at all possible.

The restaurant was low-key… the dress code was whatever you were wearing, and the drinks were set down in the bottles they came in. When Eden had wrapped her luscious lips around the long neck of the Budweiser she’d ordered, Cruz felt a twitch in his pants. He was imagining those same lips wrapped around his cock and hadn’t realized he’d been staring, until she caught him looking and smiled.

“We should order,” he said. “What would you like?”

“Anything,” she told him.

“Really?”

“Yep, I’ll eat anything. I’ve looked at the menu and it all looks delish.”

They settled on Kung Pao Chicken, Crabmeat and Crawfish Bao, and a plate of sautéed vegetables on fried rice. It was more than enough for two but by the end of the night Cruz had cleaned up what was left after Eden had called it quits, undoing her jeans to breathe. They laughed about that, with Cruz telling her, “We might need to empty our packs in the morning, or skip breakfast, to get our weight down to keep up with the others tomorrow.”

They didn’t talk much about their families, or what they did for a living. Eden seemed more interested in finding out about the ride and where Cruz and the others had intended stopping along the way. Cruz had pulled out his phone and shown her the route, pointing out where they would rest at the end of each day. It looked like a long-ass ride, but she was ready for the challenge. She hadn’t told him yet, but she was already thinking of going all the way to LA, if that was where he was going too.

“Do you think I should get some different clothes to wear?” she asked.

“You’d be more comfortable in leathers,” he told her, as he envisioned her in tight-fitting pants. “And a better helmet wouldn’t go amiss.”

“Hmm…”
