Alek moved to kiss my jaw, my neck, my collarbone. His tongue flickered over the sensitive area of his bite as I moaned once more.

“You’re mine,” he said as my body began flooding with a torrent of heat. “You’ve been mine since the very beginning.”

I felt his chest rumble against mine as we both found euphoria together. Alek collapsed onto the bed next to me, holding me close in his arms.

We stayed that way, silent in the darkness of the motel room. There I was, running from my mother as my entire world was about to collapse, yet I had never felt more exhilarated. Never in my life had I felt more safe. Never in my life had I felt so loved.

“I love you, Alek,” I whispered as my heartbeat began to slow down.

In the midst of my dwindling consciousness, I felt him smile. “I am unworthy of your love, Lyra, but I’m too selfish to turn it away.”

ChapterThirty-Six

Alek brushed his thumb against my cheek, pulling me from my dreamless sleep. I opened my eyes to find him staring at me with a wicked grin.

“What?” I asked. My voice croaked, and the morning sun was just beginning to filter through the blinds of the motel room.

He shrugged and brushed a gentle kiss onto my forehead. “I feel different,” he said.

“What do you mean different?”

His chest rose and fell as he laughed, and I soaked up every single piece of this moment in time.

“My entire body is buzzing, I feel… powerful.” His thumb brushed my cheek again. “It’s your blood. It has to be.”

I considered his words. “My blood?”

“Think about it,” he said. “I felt the same way after the blood bonding. When I bite you… your blood does something to me, Lyra. It thrills me. It could be your goddess blood.”

I didn’t quite know how to react to his words. Was he trying to tell me my blood made him more powerful?

“I really hope you’re not trying to confess that you’re actually a vampire,” I joked.

Alek smiled and leaned down to press a hot kiss on my throat. “Trust me,” he whispered with a husky voice, “I am very much alive. And I don’t actually drink your blood, but one single drop is enough to…”

We were both still very naked, but I didn’t care anymore. Alek drew his hands slowly down my body, showing me exactly how much he wanted me.

I was glad that biting me had the same effect on him as it did on me.

“Is that normal?” I asked, although with his hands on my body it was nearly impossible to speak. “To feel that way after biting someone?”

I felt his chest rumble as he brought his lips close to mine. “No,” he answered firmly. “It’s definitely not normal.”

My cell phone buzzed on the wooden nightstand.

I pulled myself up just enough to see Natalie’s name displayed across the small screen.

The phone Alek had given me had ten texts, all from Natalie.

I skimmed them all, only landing on the last one.

“I tried to stop them, Ly! They’re coming!”

My blood froze in my veins. I re-read the message three times to make sure I had it right. The horror must have been dripping from my face as Alek looked at me.

“What is it?”

“Natalie texted me. She said they’re coming.”
