“Fine,” I said. “Let’s get this over with.”

Alek eyed me for a second longer, almost to see if I was really up for the task, before leading me up to the front of the stage. My dress flowed on the steps behind me as we moved up and up, closer to the king of demons.

“Look who decided to show their face around here again,” the demon king stated as we approached. I kept my eyes down, looking anywhere else but him.

Alek stepped forward.

“Father,” he greeted. “I’d like you to meet my date, Lyra Sol.”

I bowed my head in greeting. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” I said.

When I lifted my head again, Alek’s father was staring directly at me. His eyes—the same emerald green as Alek’s—stared straight into my soul.

“Why are you here?” he snapped.

It took me a second to register his question. “Oh,” I stammered. “I—”

“She’s here because I invited her,” Alek stepped in. “Lyra was nice enough to accompany me. We’re getting to know each other quite well, actually.”

He grunted a response. We both waited for him to speak, but he said nothing. Alek stood frozen next to me.

“If you need nothing else, Father, I suppose I’ll get back to the party.”

Alek turned to walk away, taking me with him, before his father barked his name. “Alek.” We both turned, and I watched as his father grabbed Alek roughly by the arm. “Don’t forget what you’re really doing here.”

What the hell was that supposed to mean?

Alek only nodded, and before I could even look at the demon king again, he was immediately pulling me back into the crowd.

“That went well,” Alek whispered in my ear. “Better than I expected.”

I scoffed, “You call that going well? Is he always so…”

“Yes,” he finished. “He is.”

“He didn’t seem happy that I was here with you,” I noted. Unless that was how he typically expressed his happiness.

Alek guided me to the champagne table and grabbed us both a glass. “He’s just worried about me. That’s all.” He shrugged.

“Worried about you how? Because you’re with me?”

Alek shrugged. “Something like that.”

“You’re very cryptic.”

Alek looked at me again for the first time since we talked to his father. “And you’re very curious. Curiosity killed the cat, you know.” He took a sip, gazing at me over the rim of his glass.

I rolled my eyes. “It’s a good thing I’m not a cat. And excuse me for wanting to know more about the man I’m forced to date.”

The tattoo on his neck flexed as he took another drink. “The less you know, the better. Trust me.”

Somehow, I didn’t quite believe that.

“Can we leave now?” I asked. “Or do you have anyone else you’d like to parade me around for?”

I tried not to look at his mouth as he smirked. “Almost,” he said. “Dance with me first.”

The ballroom began filling with couples swaying closer together, moving their bodies to the sound of the music.
