Natalie nodded and picked up the remote for the TV. “I just don’t want to see you get hurt. By Theia or by Alek, for that matter.”

Her words warmed my chest in a way I couldn’t even explain. “I know you don’t,” I said after a few seconds. “Me, neither.”

ChapterSeven

When Alek told me that our next outing was at a shooting range, I nearly fainted.

“Absolutely not,” I groaned.

“It’s fun. Trust me. I go all the time, and if you’re going to be hanging around demons, you need to learn how to be around a weapon. This could be a great experience for you.”

“Trust you around a room full of loaded weapons and strangers shooting? No thanks.”

“You won’t have to shoot anything. My father will be there, and so will plenty of the Night Ravens. We’ll make an appearance, I’ll shoot a gun once or twice, you’ll pretend to be completely encapsulated by my skills, and we’ll leave.”

“I have a feeling it won’t be that simple.”

“I’ll pick you up at five.”

And at exactly five, I was crawling out my window once again to get into this demon’s car.

What the hell is my life turning into?

I had chosen to wear a casual pair of jeans and a black hoodie. For whatever reason, I felt like I fit in more with Alek when I was wearing dark clothing.

Alek must have noticed this too, because he smiled as I walked up to the car. “Now you definitely look like you’re prepared to shoot somebody.”

“Don’t get any crazy ideas. There’s no way I’m even touching one of those things.”

He opened the door for me with that same stupid grin on his face. “We’ll see.”

This shooting range, as Alek described it, was another one of the demon-owned establishments. It was only a few blocks away from Night Raven, and it was exclusive to legion members only.

Alek explained that the legion was essentially the pack of demons under his father’s rule. They formed a tight-knit brotherhood, and they conveniently called themselves Night Ravens. Together, they ran a few businesses. Some legal, and some not-so-legal. Although he refrained from diving into detail when I asked him to explain the illegal parts of their operations.

Even in the cold temperatures, my nerves heated my body. I reached forward to turn the air off in Alek’s car, but he did the same. Our hands collided in the center, and his rough fingers intertwined with mine. His touch electrified me before I yanked my arm back, even more blood rising to my face.

Alek chuckled, which only caused me to blush further. “If you wanted to hold my hand, you could have just asked.”

I rolled my eyes, and we drove in silence the rest of the way as I tried to calm my breathing.

“What if I get shot?” I asked as we pulled into the parking lot. “What if someone misfires or tries to get rid of me?”

“There’s barely anyone here,” Alek said. “And we all shoot at targets. It’s very safe.” He got out of the car and walked around to open my door.

“Fine,” I conceded, biting back nerves as he extended a hand to me. Taking it, I climbed from the car, adding, “But if anything goes wrong, I’m out of here.”

“Great,” he said. He walked to the trunk and grabbed a black bag. “Good plan.” He winked at me and began heading toward the small brick building.

I could see how this place was kept so discreet. From the looks of it, anyone else would think this was a worn-down, abandoned brick building. It was small, too, only one story high in the midst of the city.

Alek pulled the rusty white door open and waited for me to walk through.

The loud sound of guns firing in the distance only increased my nerves. I logically knew these things were probably safe for most people, but these weredemons. They didn’t play by human rules.

Deadly creatures with deadly weapons.

I pushed my fingernails into my palms, focusing on the sharp pain rather than the nerves that built inside of me.
