I opened my mouth to argue his words, but he was right. “How did you know my mother was gone?”

Alek walked around to the passenger side and opened the car door. “I told you. I know things. Besides, I figured I needed some way to apologize after what happened the other night.”

My body buzzed with the memory. The bite mark on my shoulder had been healing nicely, but every time I looked at it, I was flooded with the feeling of his mouth against my skin.

Accepting that as the best answer I would get, I climbed into the car. He shut my door before walking back to the driver’s side.

“Are you going to tell me what we’re doing?” I pushed.

He smiled as we pulled off, the muscles flexing in his forearms as he turned the steering wheel. “Part of being a Night Raven means looking out for our own. Today, you’re coming with me to intercept an arrest.”

I stared at him with a blank face, waiting for a better explanation. “Am I supposed to know what that means?”

His eyes flickered in delight. “It means one of us has been arrested. We’re breaking him out today.”

My jaw dropped. “What did you just say?” Alek smiled without looking at me. That same arrogant, idiotic smile. “Did you really think I would want to come with you while you committed a crime, most likely afelony?”

“I’ve done this dozens of times,” he said, waving me off. “The cops are humans, remember? We’re not. It’ll be over before they even know what's happening.”

My heart began racing. Hanging out around Alek and the demons was one thing. Breaking them out of jail…

“If my mother finds out about this—”

“What?” he asked. “What’s your mother going to do? Why are you so afraid of her?”

I shook my head and gripped the leather car seat. “You don’t understand.”

“Then make me understand. Why are you so afraid of her, Lyra?”

That question was impossible to answer. Especially to him. I took too long to answer, and Alek eventually returned his gaze to the road.

“Fine,” he said. “Don’t answer. But this will be fun. You can trust me.”

I kept my mouth shut as he merged onto the highway.

“Do you usually break out your prisoners in broad daylight?”

“Sure do,” he answered. “That’s when it’s least expected.”

I’m going to be sick.

Alek’s phone rang, and he answered it using his car’s Bluetooth. “What’s up, Zac?”

“They’re coming up behind you. Twenty seconds.”

“Got it,” Alek answered. “Same plan?”

“Same plan,” Zac confirmed.

“Let’s save this sorry son of a bitch.”

I didn’t have time to react. A police transport van passed us on the left, and Alek didn’t waste a single second. He slammed on the gas, positioning himself directly behind the van.

“What now?” I yelled over the blood pounding in my ears.

“Didn’t you ever hear that patience is a virtue?”

The van in front of us put his blinker on, slowly taking the next exit that also looked like it led nowhere.
