I laughed and threw my arm around her shoulder. “He agreed to show me the world. I’m doing what you told me to do, Natalie. I’m actually living my life for once!”

She turned to face me. “Are you telling me you made a deal with that demon? Not onlyademon, but thedemon prince?”

A laugh bubbled in my chest. “Yes, ma’am!”

I half expected her to get angry, but she only laughed along with me. “You’re full of surprises tonight, Lyra. Come on. Let’s go dance.”

ChapterThree

One day later, I walked toward Night Raven with my long black coat secured tightly around my body. There was no way I was going anywhere tonight without it covering me.

The route to the bar was fairly simple and easy to remember after last night. Sneaking out of my window with a long dress on, however, had been difficult.

Alek had sent a package with a small, hand-written note about wearing the very revealing, black silk dress that was included.

Both of which only increased my nerves.

After the tequila wore off, the doubt began to set in. This entire plan was absurd. It was risky, impulsive, and idiotic.

But either way, I had no choice. We made a deal.

Natalie had stayed with me all day. She curled my hair into long, loose waves that met my waist, and she tried her best to fill me in on everything she had heard about the demons.

It wasn’t much. Demons had a reputation of being exclusive, cliquey, and out of sight. The humans in town didn’t know Night Raven was crawling with demons. Of course, the humans didn’t even know demons existed, so they would never expect an entire demon bar.

While Nat and I didn’t have magic like our mothers, we weren’t human. Not entirely. Some children of gods developed special abilities later in life, but that was rare. I didn’t expect anything special for myself, and neither did Natalie.

“And even if you wanted out of the deal,” Natalie had explained, “it’s impossible. You kissed him, and the deal was sealed. Deals with demons have some sort of magic attached; it’s what makes them so dangerous. Neither of you could back out, or else your soul could cross to the veil.”

The veil.

Yet another fun piece of information that came with being non-human. Similar to humans, our afterlife was like two sides of the same coin—that coin being the veil. The downside was similar to hell with the supernaturals being forced to live an eternity without finding peace.

But if you were good enough and your soul deemed worthy, you could pass to the upside, where supernaturals find true peace. Supernatural creatures would be forced to live in eternity without finding peace.

The difference between the two was something called the veil, the supernatural wall that separated the other side from our world.

An eternity of misery was enough to rid me of any thoughts about backing out.

An hour later, I walked up to the front doors of Night Raven. I couldn’t make myself walk inside, though. Not yet. Walking through those doors meant I was doing this. I was committing.

If my mother ever found out about this, I would be locked away forever.Shit, where was Natalie with the tequila shots when you needed her?I reminded myself that I didn’t have a choice. We kissed, and the deal had been sealed.

God, I wished I had thought this through before I kissed the demon prince.

Rolling my shoulders back, I bit the inside of my cheek and stepped inside.

“That’s not what I told you to wear,” the familiar voice echoed through the nearly empty bar as soon as I walked through the doors. I stiffened immediately, silently cursing myself for having any reaction to his presence at all. “That’s a winter coat. Where’s your dress?”

Play it cool, Lyra. Calm and collected.

I flipped my red hair over my shoulder and made my way to the bar.

“You dressed me like a prostitute,” I said once I was there. “If I were to walk here dressed like that, I would have been arrested.”

Alekzander approached behind me, but I didn't turn to look at him. The warmth of his body alerted me to his closeness before his words did. "You're early."

“You make some great observations,” I replied blandly. “Just as I remembered from last night.”
