His expression had shuttered sometime between me standing and me leaning across the desk, forcing him to look me in the eye as I ranted, my lunch abandoned.

“I don’t know what imaginary story you’ve created in that delusional little brain of yours that makes you think you can say whatever the fuck you want to me, but I seriously suggest that you get your shit together, because I would never let a privileged, miserable cocksucker like you—” I shoved my finger in his face, frustrated by the way he stood his ground, his eyes bright with some indecipherable emotion, “—ruin the tiny slice of happiness I’ve finally found. Do me a favour andleave me the fuck alonefrom now on.”

When I whirled away from the table to flee to the bathroom, leaving my opened food container and water bottle on the table, I didn't look back.

I completely forgot that he’d locked the door.

In my haste to escape, I grabbed the handle and yanked hard enough to break the lock. Standing outside the door was a small group of my coworkers, who stepped back guiltily when I came out.

Anger still bubbling inside me, I glared at them. “What the hell are you all looking at?”

The bathroom was blessedly empty, so there were no witnesses as the nails on my right hand extended into dark claws. I barely made it into a stall before my other hand shifted entirely.

This was the risk I ran whenever I let my temper get the better of me.

Theshift.

My wolf was always adamant that she knew what was best, that she could deal with every unsavory situation. It was why I usually medicated myself with a tincture Harry got for me from the witch market near the fire station he worked at. According to the witch, it was supposed to help fallen-blood wolves sleep, but it only made my wolf docile.

The downside to taking the tincture was the headaches, which made me feel like I was hungover. I avoided taking it as often as possible.

OfcourseHell’s Ginger would be the reason I had to start medicating again. He had finally pushed my wolf over the edge. Quite a feat, considering her previous feelings toward him.

Just as I was exiting the stall Aggy barged into the bathroom, her eyes wide and lips parted in surprise.

“What the hell was that?” she asked, gesturing with a jerk of her thumb over her shoulder in the kitchen’s direction.

I sighed deeply, turning on the tap to wash my hands. “He was getting on my last nerve. I mean, what newbie thinks that he can talk to a fellow employee like that?”

“You…” Aggy gaped, the color draining from her face so quickly, she swayed on her feet.

I narrowed my eyes. “What? Would you let him call you—”

“Aria,” she hissed, cutting me off. She closed the distance between us to grab me by the shoulders and swivel me towards her. “That… that was…”

She gulped, and my brows furrowed in confusion. “That was…?”

“Sariel Ambrose, Aria,” she whispered, conspiratorially. “He’s going to inherit AMH someday, and you just called him acocksuckerwhere some of his future employees could hear.”

It took a moment for my brain to comprehend what she’s saying. And then…

“No,” I breathed, clutching her arms tightly. “No, it—he—”

But that made sense. How could I have been so ignorant?

Their features weren’t identical, but, again, gingers and redheads weren’t common. He was even built a little like his father. They shared the same broad shoulders and thick arms. Even their walk was the same confident gait.

My heart plummeted into my gut.

“You really didn’t fucking know?” Aggy asked, incredulously. “Dear gods, helookslike a younger, hotter version of his father. What are you? Blind?!”

I pulled away from her. “Oh my god.”

“If you want to keep your job, I suggest yougrovel,” she urged. “Even ifhedoesn’t report you to HR, one of his little lackeys will. They’d do anything to get a little positive attention from him.”

I was still reeling from Aggy’s revelation when I returned to my desk. It was hard to miss the whispering as I passed some cubicles.

People were talking about my outburst. There was no chance I was getting out of this unscathed. Someone was going to report me to HR and I was going to get fired.
