“I’m not leaving you to deal with Azazel on your own,” he said, eyes narrowing on her. “Aria—”

He was interrupted by the window over the kitchen exploding inward. Glass and wood rained down as two other windows were also smashed open.

Fallen-blood wolves. Theyreeked.

Credence and I dropped to the floor simultaneously. Sariel grabbed one of the wolves that had climbed through the window and flung him back out. He slammed into the others that were also trying to climb through, sending them all back out the window.

“Bunny!” Credence snapped. She said something in a language I didn't understand, and I watched in morbid fascination as Bunny shifted.

The dog tripled in size, her body morphing from solid flesh to ash—as she advanced on one of the fallen blood wolves that had climbed through the window, pieces of her body flaked onto the ground, leaving a perfect view of her insides behind. Her stomach also seemed to be filled with… fire?

I only got a glimpse of the inferno churning inside of her before her body repaired itself, and she let out a roar that shook the foundation of the cabin.

“She’s a hellhound,” Credence explained right when Bunny pounced. I gagged at the crunch that happened when she snapped open her massive jaws and latched onto one of the wolves.

I opened my mouth to ask her why the hell she would bind herself to a lesser demon like that, but what came out instead was, “And you named her Bunny?!”

Credence’s lips pursed as she fought to suppress a smile. A wolf went soaring over our heads, and I turned to Sariel to find that he’d been the one responsible for that.

“Come on, Aria,” he urged. “You need to get out of here.”

“But I’ve only just arrived.”

The mocking lilt of a new voice caused the hair on my arms and the back of my neck to stand on end.

Bunny whirled towards the voice, a growl rumbling out of her. Her mouth and teeth were stained with blood as she launched at them.

Credence tensed next to me, and we shot to our feet, swirling around in time to see Azazel catch the hellhound by the throat.

He was also holding a distraught Lucy Ambrose with a bruising grip on her upper arm. She was still in her sleep clothes, her hair in giant curlers and bedroom slippers on her feet.

Her husband, on the other hand, looked insane.

Blood ran from a deep cut along his hairline down the left side of his face. His eyes were wild and unfocused. A red ring had formed around his irises, and his sclera sported spiderwebs of angry red veins.

Bunny made a pained gurgling sound as Azazel’s claws sunk into her neck. Her body began to solidify the harder he squeezed, shrinking until she’d reverted to her Doberman form. Her body jerked, and Azazel’s grip tightened until there was a loud squelch—she fell limp in his hold, and he dropped her body to the floor like she was nothing.

“No!” Credence shouted. Sariel reached her before I could, preventing her from throwing herself at Azazel. “Bunny!”

“Oh God,” Lucy sobbed. “What is wrong with you, Azazel? You said she was in danger!”

My heart was pounding so hard, I couldn’t even find it in myself to feel sorry for Lucy. I was sure this must be a total shock to her. As far as she knew, her husband was a philanthropist millionaire who adored her.

He ignored her in favor of turning to Sariel and me. “You two have caused me a lot of trouble,” he hissed.

Sariel took a step closer to me, and Credence collapsed against him.

We were surrounded. Fallen-blood wolves had come in through the door, which now hung from only one of its hinges. Some were dragging their unconscious friends outside; others simply stepped around what remained of the wolves Bunny hadn't consumed.

Sariel opened his mouth to respond when another wolf stepped inside. He was more grand than the others, even bigger even than the three that had cornered us in the gas station.

Sariel stiffened when he stepped inside. He subtly inhaled, then shook his head.

“You’ve finally found the female,” the newcomer said. Sariel shifted subtly, pushing both his grandmother and me behind him.

“Who the fuck are you?” Sariel spat.

The wolf smirked. “Your worst nightmare, boy.”
