“I taught you stupid fucking humans how to survive! I gave you knowledge! You learned how to make weapons from me!”

His voice rose an octave as he spoke.

“I knew the risks,” he snapped. “I knew I’d be punished! But I had mankind on my side. I had them, and they were willing to do anything for me, until theyweren’t.They tried to kill me. Theybegged God to take me back, tried to bargain with Lucifer to hold me in the pits of hell!”

He let out a bark of disbelieving laughter. “Can you imagine?” he asked incredulously. “After everything I did for them, those conniving little cunts tried to get rid of me. Me! The savior of mankind!”

“I think that had more to do with the fact that you were a murderous, ill-tempered bastard who raped and pillaged,” Sariel shot at him..

Azazel’s head snapped in his direction. “I was on Earth. I was doing as the humans did,” he said with a grin.

Sariel glared. “Youtaughtthem how to do that.”

“Inconsequential, compared to the wealth I brought them.”

“You’re a sick fucking bastard,” Lucy hissed.

“I’myoursick fucking bastard,” he smiled, and I could make out just a smidge of adoration in his gaze. “I’ve touched every part of you, Lucy. You can’t call me sick without being a little sick yourself.”

“I’m going to throw up,” she gagged. Credence released her just as she began to heave.

“The Grigori fucked up while I was bidding my time,” he continued conversationally. He stepped in a pool of blood that had formed beneath one of the mangled bodies Bunny had left behind; he snapped his fingers, and one of the wolves immediately sought something to clean the puddle. “They’d had illegitimate offspring, indulged in the way I’d taught the humans to. And their mistake bore fruit; elite races of humans were born, what we now callsupernaturals.

“I still remember the first vampire to kill a human. He’s around somewhere, imprisoned in a tomb. Dracula, I think they called him. He was a prince at some point.”

“Get to the fucking point,” Sariel growled.

“The point,” Azazel said slowly, “is that they left these races to govern themselves, which was a poor decision on their part. So, I’m going to fix that.”

“But the Grigori who—”

“They’re fucking idiots, Sariel,” he interrupted with a breathy laugh. “They’re lazy and don’t care what I do as long as I present a report every decade.”

“So what? You’re just going to take over America?” Sariel questioned.

“And then Canada, maybe…” he hummed.

I gulped. “And the Council will just let you?”

Azazel’s expression darkened. “Theywon’t be an issue much longer.”

“And how do you plan to do that exactly? Do you think you and a group of fallen-bloods could pull off a coup?” Sariel asked, sounding doubtful.

“God, no,” Azazel laughed. “But me and every single fallen-blood wolf in America, on the other hand…”

My blood ran cold at the smile that stretched his lips.

“My main obstacle is controlling that many wolves. I’d need some help with that.” Azazel eyed me lecherously. “Imagine my surprise when the answer to all my problems literally walks into my front door.”

I shuddered. “I can’t… I can’t control that many…”

“Of course not, darling,” he cooed condescendingly. “Not without a little experimentation and scientific help.”

Sariel’s growl stunned even me. “You won’t touch her,” he threatened.

“Or what?” Azazel dared. “There’s nothing you can do, boy. You’re checkmated. I’ll have the girl… and you, too, from the looks of it,” he observed glancing between us. “If not, I know how to get you to do what I want.”

He would hurt Mikey or Lucy.
