I could only gape at him.

“You slept for about sixteen hours,” he informed me. “I had to resuscitate you twice before that. We’ve got about thirty minutes on the road before we’re in San Diego. Be a good girl and sit back and get comfortable. This might be the last time you see the outside of the Estate for a while.”

His threat hit home.

The combination of his betrayal, the fact that I was stuck in this car with a wolf that wasn’t fully healed enough to shift, and my body not being recovered from the withdrawals made me sit back heavily in my seat.

After all the trouble Sariel and I had gone through, it was our friend we’d needed to be careful of the most.

Johnny turned the radio on. The Weeknd’s voice flooded the car. I loved his music, butDie For Youwas not what I needed to hear at a time like this.

I was suddenly very overwhelmed. I couldn’t say exactly how my single attempt at an ordinary life had turned into me being handcuffed to the headrest in my mate’s best friend's car. And yet, here I was, with a murderous wolf pacing around my conscience and my temper on the edge of no return.

I glared at Johnny through the rearview mirror until he glanced up.

He jolted when he met my unblinking stare. His mask of indifference chipped; I saw fear on his face for the first time ever, and could scent it in the air as it wafted out from him.

“Holy Gods,” he choked, eyes falling to the road again.

I could feel my wolf slipping into the forefront of my mind, feelher, feel her dominance and how we’d merged into one. Suddenly, I could see the world through her eyes. The pores on Johnny’s face looked like they’d been magnified; the world looked brighter, bigger, closer.

“Your eyes,” he whispered.

I glanced at myself in the rearview mirror and smiled at how the whites of my eyes had been replaced by red. I looked like a real fallen-blood wolf.

Johnny shuddered when I flashed him a grin, running my tongue along my top teeth.

I tested my strength on the handcuffs, but they didn't budge.

I yanked again. Nothing happened.

“They’re shifter-proof,” Johnny said, his eyes now glued to the road. He radiated tension from every muscle in his body. When I shifted to get closer to him, he didn't even look up.

I’d never experienced this seamlessness with my wolf before. I could actually feel her emotions. They weren’t just thoughts projected into my head, no; I was experiencing them. I couldfeelthat she wanted to sink her teeth into any part of Johnny she could reach so that she could shake him like a ragdoll.

She wanted to hurt this male for betraying her mate, and, by extension, her. And I had no objections.

Johnny began to pray.

I frowned at the headrest again. When I yanked it hard, the entire thing came loose.

Johnny and I locked eyes as he spun the wheel wildly, sending me flying sideways into the door. The headrest banged into the top of the car, and I scrambled to find something to hold on to.

Johnny didn’t slow long enough for me to regain my balance, picking up speed instead.

My wolf and I remained silent in the back seat; she urged me to relax and let myself roll with the car instead of tensing my muscles. I took her advice, because I could understand how it made sense.

I understood my wolf completely, now. Wholly.

As I laid in the backseat, I wondered if this was what everyone else felt when they met their wolves; this harmony, this oneness with their inner animal. I envied them.

My wolf was smug, but she understood we weren’t like the rest. She understood better than I did, really. She’d apparently even known that Sariel was our soulmate from the moment we’d met in Ambrose Media House’s reception area.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. I was going into this situation blind and without allies, but my wolf was confident that we’d get our mate back. She guided me to a small glowing spot inside me; before I even tapped into it, I knew it was my bond with Sariel.

I gasped as I was flooded with emotions. Indescribable rage, hurt, longing, disappointment, then suddenly an elation that made me giddy. He’d felt me access the bond.

My muscles slackened until my body was trembling.
