Sariel? Holy shit, you’re in my head?

I stilled. I decided to send a single thought through.Aria?

Yeah, it’s me.

I felt her wolf’s sorrow and excitement like they were tangible things inside me. The mental bond had brightened even further.

You’re— I paused to collect myself, —in my head?

I don’t know what you did, but you did this. Not me.

I was about to demand she tell me where she was before the wall in front of me creaked, then moved inward before disappearing into the side wall. It revealed a Para with a whip, as well as several others.

“Hello, prettyboy,” the Para said, his tone dark.

With the door open I could make out two figures in the cell behind them that had moved closer to their own gate. They had to be Luz and Charles, the vampires who’d been communicating with me.

I saw sorrow flash in Luz’s expression when the door slid shut.

Whatever you hear, Aria. I want you to ignore it. Close the bond or something, block it out.

Sariel? What the h–

My angel closed it for me. He understood not wanting our mate to see or feel what was about to happen.

And then the first fist connected with my face.

ONE POWERFUL WOLF

Aria

We were able to read each other’s mind, now.

Was that good news, on a scale of one-to-ten? To a girl who constantly overthought or assumed the worst, it'd be a one. To a girl that was unsure of where she stood in her man’s life, though? It was a sure ten.

Not that I’d been purposefully snooping through Sariel’s head, looking for answers about how he felt about me, or anything so asinine. I had better self-control than that.

Just kidding. No I didn’t.

I went snooping around in his head and discoveredindecision. He was unsure about something unknown, which I didn’t blame him for; things were very muddled right now, and I wasn’t even sure how I myself felt about him… aside from how my wolf and I were elated that we had someone who was essentially stuck with us.

Maybe that made me a little sick in the head, but after spending most of my life secluded with my sister as a guardian, I’d take what I could get romance-wise.

Even though that last thought was only a half-joke, I truly did understand Sariel’s indecision, whether it was towards me or the situation we’d found ourselves in. We hadn't met under normal circumstances, and our relationship had started off rocky at best. As far as trials and tribulations went in relationships, I think we went above and beyond, honestly.

How many other couples could say that they’d been actively hunted and were now being held on trial? Or that they were to be executed for not only being two hybrids, but ones who were destined to be together because the universe said so?

Not many at all.

As things stood, our relationship would end at the hands of the Upper Council if we didn’t figure out what the hell we were going to do about being locked up in an Isolation Center.

Our current plan was falling apart because my mate—apparently half-dead and suspended from energy-draining walls like the ones I had—was using the little strength that he had to bedifficult. He was not pleased that I was in a cell with an angel he didn’t know, and despite me reassuring him that Neo seemed harmless, I could still feel his agitation through the bond.

I’d learned that he was stuck in solitary confinement in a cell that was apparently defective, because he’d made two unlikely friends who’d been keeping him sane.
