I moved on autopilot, watering the flowers next to me, smiling when they opened and regained color. I watered until I was drained, until I was being shaken awake by Neo.

That’s enough, Aria, came Sariel’s voice from darkness. You’ve given me enough.

My heart soared at the strength in his voice.

I thought I lost you,I warbled out. The sob escaped me before I could stop it.That was fucking terrifying. Let’s never do that again.

Shit. I didn’t mean to scare you, babe.

Somehow, that term of endearment made this worse. I cried a little harder.

I could see Neo frowning at me out of the corner of my eye. I shot him a thumbs up so he knew I’d done it.

Don’t cry, Aria. You’re seriously going to break my heart.

Sorry, sorry.I sniffled, trying to clear my throat and calm down.

You shared alotof energy with me. How are you doing? Are you okay? I felt you fading out of consciousness for a second there.

I don’t feel so bad, actually,I admitted.I thought I’d feel worse.

Sariel’s chuckle filtered through my head.I sent you back some of your energy. You’ll need it. I’m considering that offer that damn angel made now.

You realize you’re an angel too, right?

Doesn’t change a thing about how I feel. Tell that fucker that if a hair on your head is harmed, I’m coming for him and his whole fucking family.

I’m not telling him that.WhenI frowned, Neo raised a questioning brow at me. I lifted a finger to indicate that he should give me a minute. So, to be clear, you’re willing to wait and see if his friends will come get him?

Yes. And when I see him, I’ll execute that threat whether you told him or not.

“He says he’s down to wait it out,” I informed Neo. “We don’t have many other options.”

“Good,” Neo said, stretching his long legs out in front of him. “I wasn’t going to leave you behind, anyway. I didn’t really care if he said otherwise.”

I opened my mouth to protest when Sariel interrupted me.How will you find me?

That gave me pause.

“What now?”

“He’s asking how we’re going to find him,” I relayed.

“Does he know where he is?”

Do you know where you are?

Luz and Charles said we’re underground. About thirty feet. Unsure if we’re on the last floor.

“He said they’re underground, thirty feet? Not sure if that’s the last floor.”

“We’re above ground,” Neo informed me. “That’s all I know. Thirty feet is about two stories down. If we learned where we are, then finding him shouldn’t be too hard. It’s getting around the guards that might be the biggest issue.”

“Got it.”

Neo says we’re above ground, but he’s not sure how far,I thought. If we get to the ground floor—

That might get you caught. I think you should leave me.
