It fizzled out.

We were rewarded with a full second of silence.

Reese interrupted it with a nervous chuckle, expertly maneuvering the SUV through traffic. “Well, that was exciting.”

Neo lets out a choked laugh. “I was having those exact same thoughts.”

“We could have died,” Johnny pointed out drolly.

Reese just laughed again. “Exactly. Exciting—especially for me.

INTRODUCTIONS AND EXPLANATIONS

Aria

Ihad been in two high speed chases too many.

Adrenaline still pumped through me at an obscene rate as Reese sped along the highway. The Paras had followed us out onto the road and were keeping up. At one point, the car had switched off mid-turn, no doubt the work of one of the Paras in the car chasing us; if not Marilyn’s quick thinking and, once again, Neo’s reflexes, we would’ve been driven off the road.

On the bright side, there was nothing much they could do without alerting human authorities that they were conducting a high-speed chase on the highway. Granted, going one-hundred-and-eleven miles in a sixty-five mile-per-hour lane was definitely not the way to remain inconspicuous, but we were running for our lives, here.

I tried not to think about how Reese was handling the SUV like an expert for someone who worked as a chemist.

…Which reminded me. “How the hell are you here?” I addressed Reese.

“Johnny found me,” she said casually, as though she weren’t currently weaving in and out of traffic at an ungodly speed. She seemed relaxed behind the wheel, from what I could see.

I turned to Johnny, a question on the tip of my tongue, when Reese jerked the SUV to the right, sending us all slamming into the side.

“Hold onto your tits, people,” she said with a grin. “We’re making an illegal U-turn in three—”

“What?” Marilyn squawked.

“On the highway?!” Johnny echoed disbelievingly, grabbing for one of the grab handles.

“—two—”

“Wait a minute, Reese!” I scrambled to grab onto my chair.

“Precious cargo, here, human,” Sariel growled, pressing himself into the side of the vehicle.

“One!”

Reese yanked on the hand brake as she spun the steering wheel all the way to the right. The car made a harsh one-eighty. Marilyn and I screamed, Neo laughed, and Sariel and Johnny cursed while she squeezed the SUV through the small break in the wall separating the lanes. The tires screeched, the scent of burning rubber and smoke filling the air. We were delayed for just a few seconds, the SUV engine rumbling in warning, before she dropped the brake and floored the pedal again.

Silence filled the inside as we struggled to recover from her insane driving.

And then, Neo broke it.

“That was…” He gulped, head turning toward Reese. “...the hottest thing I’ve ever experienced.”

Reese flushed. A nervous laugh escaped her. “Thanks. My dad, um… My dad used to race when I was younger. He taught me everything I know,” she said, beaming.

There was no mistaking the way Neo’s expression softened. “He’s probably proud.”

“I hope so. I lost him to cancer a few years ago.”
