Johnny acquiesced with no argument, shifting Marilyn down a seat and maneuvering his long legs over to sit in the back. “That’s better,” he said as he pulled Marilyn to him and kissed her gently.

“And you two aren’t introducing yourselves?” Marilyn mused as she snuggled into Johnny.

“I’m Sariel. I’m a half-appointed, half-fallen angel, and the first living offspring of Azazel Ambrose,” Sariel glossed over.

Neo jerked around in his seat to look at Sariel. “You have the dual-coloured wings, don’t you?”

Sariel and I both tensed at his question.

“What?” I asked, my gaze narrowing on Neo. “What do you know about dual-coloured wings?”

Neo shrugged. “It’s a guess, really. Black and white mixingshouldcreate gray, but depending on your mother’s ranking, your genes probably didn't really mix in the way a lower-ranked angel did. For example, you have a gold ring around your eye like me; it’s a proverbial halo that only high ranks and their offspring get. So, you either have white wings, or you have one of each.”

“I didn’t know that,” Sariel admitted. “I have one of each.”

“That’s pretty awesome, all things considered. One of these days, I’ll give you the rundown on the whole Heaven-appointed angel shitshow,” Neo said, turning back around in his seat.

“You're a full-blooded angel, then?” Reese questioned.

“Yeah. Angels aren’t supposed to reproduce with anyone but other heavenly angels. The punishment for that is death—and not just by the Upper Council, but by the Archangels. The Grigori are an excellent example of what happens when angels let their libidos do the thinking.”

Reese considered his words. “They created the nephilim.”

“By screwing human women, yes.”

“Back up,” Marilyn said. “Neo, your parents wereangels?”

Neo turned in his seat again. “Yes, they were.”

“They were part of the Resistance, though?”

“And they would still be a part of the Resistance if the Council hadn’t killed them.”

“I thought you’d been taken in like I was. An orphan. You looked nothing like them.”

“Yes, well, I was a child of my environment. I was raisedunderthe sun, unlike them, so I was darker naturally. The hair is the same… if I had white-blonde hair, I think I would have been too easily distinguished. I didn’t know Jeff and Lizaweren’tyour parents, though.”

“They might as well have been.”

“Hm. Aria?” Neo turned his gaze to me. “We haven’t heard about you yet.”

“Uh… I’m Aria Gribald, and up until recently, I was a normal girl living in a normal world.”

“You mean not-normal wolf,” Sariel corrected, his hand stroking down the length of my spine.

“Anyway, I recently lived my own version of A Series of Unfortunate Events, got my dream job, met the boss’s son, got fired because of the boss’s son, ran for my life with the help of the boss’s son, got caught, met an Archdemon—”

“What?!” Marilyn squealed.

“Oh, shit,” Johnny said, wide-eyed.

“—all that stuff back there happened, and now I’m here.”

You skipped a few things.Importantthings.

Privatethings, I corrected.Things we can tell them about when we’re not on the road.

Fine. But I want to see the look on that angel’s face when he hears exactly how mine you are.
