“I knew it!” Johnny announced, breaking the tension. “I don’t care how you feel, I am feeling very damn smug and am going to use this opportunity to say ‘I told you so.’”

Despite myself, I couldn’t suppress my smile at his enthusiasm.

I didn't notice before now, but he’d removed all of his jewelry, and the long-sleeve shirt he wore covered all of his tattoos. He reminded me of a younger, more carefree Johnny, before he’d become a poor combination oftattoo addictandheir to billions of dollars worth in assets.

Why the hell would you do that?Aria snapped in my mind, distracting me from Johnny’s enthusiastic chattering with Marilyn.

Do what?I asked, glancing down at her. She released my arm and sat up to glare at me.You didn’t want them to know we were mates?

Her expression hardened.I just said we would tell them at a more opportune time. You made the decision to tell them without even telling me.

The same way you made the decision to tell Neo everything about us without consulting me?

She glared sharp daggers at me, then leaned against the door farthest from me.

If my angel’s headspace had furniture and breakable things in it, he would be smashing them all right now. He wasfuriousthat I would upset our mate. Whose side was he even on?

I ignored him in favor of focusing on Aria. You can’t actually be angry that I told our friends we were mates, right?

For one inexplicably mad moment, I wondered if there was more to it than that, if the attraction Neo exuded wasn’t just one way.

And then my angel proceeded to smash that thought into smithereens, my vision dimming as he struggled to take over.

Sariel?Aria’s tentative voice filtered through my mind, making my angel falter. Are you okay? You’re growling.

That snapped me out of it so quickly, my head spun.

Everyone was staring. Even Reese was glancing nervously between me and the road.

“Sorry. My angel and I are having a hard time settling after everything that went down,” I explained. I didn’t want to admit that my angel would be perfectly okay if Aria would simply crawl into my arms and forgive me. I was not above groveling, even if I knew I was right.

Sorry. I don’t know what that was,she apologized.

It’s okay.I motioned for her to come closer with my hand. Can you come here, please?

“Are you two…” Marilyn paused, struggling to find the right word to describe what she wanted to ask “...talking to each other?”

Neo scoffed. “Yeah. They can communicate through a mind link.”

“Holy fuck.”

“That’s insane,” Johnny said, eyes widening as he took us in.

I shrugged. Aria crawled into my open arms. “There isn’t much we know about the bond. It’s a learning experience, and we’ve learned most of it while experiencing extreme emotions.”

“Experiencing extreme emotions? You?” Johnny questioned. “That’s actually crazier than you being able to communicate in your heads.”

“Ha-ha-ha,” I deadpanned. “You have to feel it to understand.”

“I think it’s impressive that you have, like, a person you’re meant to be withsomuch, your bodies created metaphysical pathways where you can communicate solely with each other through thought,” Reese said. “It’s next level.”

We stared at her in silence.

“Huh,” Marilyn grunted. Her eyes lost focus as she thought about what Reese said. “I didn’t think of it that way. Something capable of carving a pathway into something that cannot be perceived by the naked senses.”

“Impressive,” Johnny echoed.

“It is. But if the bond hasn’t been properly solidified, it can be broken,” Neo said, eyeing me before he turned back around to the front.
