What did I get?

Gunshots.

I was woken by Sariel dragging me out of bed and throwing clothes at me, all accompanied by the sound of guns firing off.

“Get dressed,” he said hurriedly. “It’s the human military.”

That shook the cobwebs of sleep that clung to my consciousness free and got me moving. I was dressed in record time.

“Pack a bag; we’re leaving,” Sariel said.

I pressed my lips into a thin line to stop myself from saying “I told you so.” This wasn’t the right time, so I would just get to it eventually.

In the back of the closet was an empty backpack that I stuffed as many jeans, leggings, and t-shirts as I could into. And underwear, of course. I’d had to learn the hard way that being on the run without clean underwear was not fun.

Neo and the others were already waiting for us.

“They’re evacuating to the underground bunker,” he informed us. “The Director is out front trying to buy us some time.”

“Alone?” Sariel and I echoed.

“That old hoot once flattened an entire vampire nest on his own,” Marilyn said as we followed Neo down the stairwell. “He can handle himself just fine.”

“What the hell is he?” Sariel asked.

Neo shrugged. “We don’t know. We’re just happy he’s on our side.”

I could hear shouting when we got to the bottom floor. Parents were struggling to get their children to the back where the entrance to the bunker was hidden. It was total chaos.

“Split up; help them get the children and needy to the bunker,” Sariel instructed.

Johnny and Marilyn made a left, heading to the building that hosted the women, and Neo jogged out to the right toward the children’s building.

I could smell smoke in the distance as I started the task of lifting small children who appeared to be lost and carrying them to the stairs. An adult would take them down, and we’d find their parents afterwards.

Reese was waiting at the bottom for us. It was safer for her there.

Just as we got the last elderly couple situated beneath the hatch, an explosion rocked the compound. Sariel and I rushed to the door in time to see a few soldiers round the main building, guns raised. They wore all-black with tactical gear strapped to them. They were clearly meant to be a stealth team, yet they were humans against supernatural beings.

Before Sariel could move, Neo materialized in their path.

“Gentlemen,” he began, arms spread in an inviting gesture. “Welcome to our humble abode—”

They fired. Simultaneously.

Sariel and I moved back into the building. A gunshot wound wouldn’t immobilize us—well, I shouldn’t say ‘us,’ because a gunshot wound would absolutely immobilizeme—but it would hurt like hell. A bullet to the head would also be detrimental, of course. I wasn’t sure anyone other than vampires, angels, and demons could come back from something like that.

My heart pounded as I wondered if Neo had gotten away in time.

The firing stopped. Sariel peeked around the corner to see what was happening. There was then a high pitched squeal, followed by the sound of metal on metal and several grunts.

Sariel stood, and I followed.

Neo had disposed of the entire team. Their guns were in an obscure pile of twisted metal next to them.

“The guns were Marilyn’s work,” Neo said, brushing non-existent lint from his shirt. “The rest was me. Humanity’s greatest downfall is their fragility.”

“The rest” in question was the pile of men stacked on each other, unconscious.
