“Be sure to take supplies with you,” the Director said. “And I wish you success.”

I glanced at Sariel to find him already staring at me.

I have a bad feeling about this, Aria.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Sariel

We knew the contact was a particularly sadistic woman when we realized we were being sent in circles.

The Director had warned us this would be difficult, but hope was a hell of a motivator. This was shit, though.

Neo and Johnny met me in one of the three spots we’d met in twice before. I could feel agitation wafting off of them.

“It’s a woman,” Neo blurted. “It has to be. Men are too blunt to toy with us for this long.”

“This long” being almost five fucking hours, of course.

We’d found the address easily enough—it was an abandoned port—and then we’d found the follow-up longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates, as instructed. Since there were six, we each took two to follow, but somehow, regardless of which coordinates we had, we would end up reconvening at one of three different points. It was like the coordinates were changing as we moved.

“It’s not a witch,” Johnny added. “I can smell this person very faintly. They smell a bit like the Director. I don’t know what their scent is specifically, but it’s nothing I’m familiar with.”

“We never did find out what the Director was growing up,” Neo said to himself.

Johnny frowned. “We have to be missing something. If I could get a birds-eye view of this place…”

“That’s a great idea,” Neo interrupted, beginning to take his shirt off.

I glared at him. “No.It’s broad fucking daylight, Neo. You think people won’t see a man with white wings in the sky?”

“That’s true,” Johnny said distractedly. “I wish I had a pen and paper. If I could draw this place, I could see what we’re missing.”

Neo frowned. “Just use your imagination.”

Johnny went quiet as he paced. He turned in the direction of the first point we’d met at, then the second, then the third.

And then he turned toward us.

“Guys,” he said as he stepped past us. He turned back around and took a step in each direction. “Guys,” he repeated, for some reason.

“Johnathan,” Neo said dryly as we watched him do the same thing again.

“This is the central point,” he said.

Neo and I just stared at him dumbly.

“We’re standing in the center of the port,” he stressed. “The first point we met was North, and the second was South,” he said, turning in that direction. “The last was West. And we’ve continued to meet in that order.”

I exchanged an understanding glance with Neo. “The closest continent to the East of America is—”

“Europe,” Neo supplied.

“And Africa,” Johnny murmured.

We turned as a unit to face the West. Johnny took the first step, and we followed him.
