“What’s our task?” I asked.

She grinned, flashing us all of her teeth. “It’s a wonderful task! I was so excited when they sent the instructions! I hope you are successful. I would like to see how you achieve it. I know it will be hard, but your group is smart, unlike others.”

“What is our task, fae?” Neo repeated, annoyance coloring his tone.

Meanwhile, dread had begun to pool in my stomach. Whatever this task was, it was not going to be easy.

“You can call me Jae,” she said instead of answering. “I am calledJae. Not fae. They rhyme, yes, but that is not—”

“Ourtask, Jae,” Neo repeated slowly.

“Oh!” She reached into her coat and retrieved a sealed gold envelope, then held it out. I watched, fascinated, as the paper unfolded itself, after which Jae shook it out and read it to us.

“Your task is simple. You must bring with you on your journey a willing relative of any member of the Council which presides over the Americas and countries outside of Europe,” she started.

My lips tilted upward. We’d already passed the test, then, hadn’t we?

“You mean like him?” Neo motioned in my direction with his thumb.

“It cannot be a member who is already part of your party,” Jae shot down, a gleam in her eye.

My stomach dropped, and my smile slipped.

“Fuck,” Neo breathed. I shared his sentiments.

Jae bored her eyes into me as the sheet of paper caught fire on one end.

“You may begin.”

BLOODY DECEPTION

Aria

Ifelt the confusion and anger down the bond before Sariel even mentioned that he was okay.

The girls and I gathered in our room to wait. Neo entered first, his expression solemn, Johnny entered second, his expression thoughtful, and Sariel entered last, his expression pissy.

“I take it you didn’t find the contact?” I asked. “You’ve been gone for more than half the day.”

“Oh, we found her alright,” Johnny said.

“...Okay?” I dragged out.

None of them spoke.

“Well?” Marilyn prompted. “What the hell happened?”

“She’s fae,” Neo said, his gaze far away and unfocused. “She’s a real-life fucking fae.”

Marilyn sank onto the bed heavily. “That isn’t funny. A fae? Really, guys?”

“I think they might be the ones running the colonies in Europe,” Sariel said as he paced the room’s length.

“It would make sense,” Neo admitted. “They’re supposed to be the superior version of witches.”

“I think they would consider that offensive,” Marilyn admitted. “They’re anoriginalsupernatural species, like angels and demons. They aren’t a byproduct of some other species like the rest of us.”
