It’ll be fine,I promised him, even though I really shouldn’t have. I understood that false promises were not a great idea and could do damage to someone.

I really fucking hope so, pup. I just got my little brother back; I can’t afford to lose him again.

My heart sank. I turned to him, grabbing his hand in mine and squeezing it tightly in reassurance.

“You must be Michaelson Ambrose,” Jae said finally. Sariel and Johnny tensed at the way she purred his name. I felt the hum of magic, and just as I opened my mouth to say something, Mikey answered her.

“And you must be the fae.”

No sooner had the words left his mouth did he freeze, a white film sliding over his eyes like a shade.

Sariel launched himself in Mikey’s direction, only to bounce off an invisible forcefield.

Johnny growled, but Jae only lifted her hand. “I won’t hurt him,” she stated calmly. “This is just procedure. Truth-Saying doesn’t hurt them.”

Sariel’s eyes had bled to red as he turned to her.

“Be calm, angel. Or I will discontinue this application and you all will be stuck here.”

That got me moving. I stepped in Sariel’s path, my palms up in surrender. “Give her a chance to work, Sariel. She’s done this before.” I gestured to where his brother remained unmoving, yet unharmed. “Look at Mikey; he seems fine to me.”

Calm down, Sariel. You’ll fuck this up for all of us.

That snapped him out of his trance, and he shook his head. “Get on with it,” he growled, eyes trained on Mikey.

Jae gave him one more skeptical glance before refocusing on Mikey. “What’s his middle name?”

Sariel’s brows twitched as he answered. “Bael.”

“Please recite the entirety of your name, your mother's name as you know it, and your father’s name as you know it.”

Mikey’s spine straightened as he began to speak. “Michaelson Bael Ambrose, Lucy Bethany Ambrose, Azazel Ambrose.”

A shiver coursed through me at the robotic quality of his words. It was like he had no control over what was leaving his mouth.

Jae glanced at Sariel for confirmation. And when he nodded, she continued. “Have you been coerced, bribed, or blackmailed into entering into this agreement?”

Sariel’s grip on my hand tightened. Johnny sucked in a breath.

“No.”

Sariel sagged.

“Do you intend to cause harm to the fae race, or the people under its protection?”

My eyebrows hit my hairline. This was not how I thought this would go, and from the way Sariel’s shoulders had returned to their rigid state, I could tell he didn’t like this, either.

“No.”

“Did you have previous knowledge of the fae?”

“No.”

“Are you a blood relative of Sariel Ambrose?”

“Yes.”

“Have you ever willingly or otherwise caused harm to one of your own?”
