“So… what?”

“The others can’t really hear us because they’re in, like, a better version of your cell. I think yours might be defective.”

“You’re the only two in open cells?”

“Pretty much. The others are empty,” Charles added.

“Why are you here?” Luz pressed. “You didn’t answer my question.”

I debated on whether or not to respond, but maybe I could squeeze some information out of them. They might know where Aria was, or something—anything—to give me an ounce of hope. “From what I overheard, you already know why I’m here.”

“It’s true, then?” Luz asked, more to himself than me. “You got yourself a soulmate?”

“Mysoulmate,” I growled. “Nota. She’smine.”

I had to shake my head to clear the sudden red haze filling my vision. The insinuation that she was just a regular person I’d stumbled across rubbed me the wrong way.

In any case, I continued. I wasn’t sure why I needed to explain myself to them, but I felt it was necessary that I clarify in case they were confused. “You don’t pick a soulmate out of a line-up. You’re drawn to them, like metal to a magnet. Like bugs are to light. It’s not something she nor I could control. We’re joined in a way that not just anyone could understand, I don’t think. She’s mine, I’m hers. That’s it. Andif, by some sick twisted hand of fate, we had to pick a soulmate out of an assortment, I think I would have picked her.”

Silence fell.

I took a deep breath as I shifted to alleviate some of the pressure in my arms. My shoulders burned, the pain having long since morphed into something I was struggling to block out; it was now a pulsing sting that raced up and down my back with every move I made.

“I can’t believe it,” Luz finally said. “I can’t believe you’re telling me that we have soulmates.”

Charles just made a garbled sound.

I frowned. “Is he okay?”

“He’s fine, he’s just crying,” Luz explained. “How’d you know she was your mate?”

“I can’t explain it, alright? You justknow. And if you don’t initially hate each other, I’m sure it’ll be even easier to recognize them than it was for us,” I breathed.

“We all have one, right?”

“I don’t know about the rest of you jackasses, but I have one, and that’s for sure.” I laughed, only to wince when pain sliced through my chest at the movement.

“It sucks that you’re gonna be dead in a few days,” Luz suddenly said.

My blood iced over.

“What?” I croaked, my throat suddenly dry again. “What do you mean, dead?”

Charles sniffled. “The Upper Council plans to kill you in like two days,” he said around a hiccup.

“Yeah,” Luz said, his tone solemn. “Heard you were half-bloods, too? And she’s half-fallen, half-blessed wolf? That’s fucking crazy. She lasted a really long time on her own.”

My heart began to pound. I droned out everything else they said as the words settled in me, shaking me to my core. I shouldn’t have been this surprised, but I hadn’t been taking Aria into consideration when I thought about what the Council would do to us.

Just two fucking days?

My angel collapsed onto the bond, his wings wrapped tightly around it. It felt like he was weeping, a bone-deep sadness filling me.

We were going to lose our soulmate. We hadn’t even been together long enough to get to know each other well.

I’d only gotten a single taste of her lips, yet no chance to show her how sorry I was for the way we’d met, nor to convince her that I could be better than the dickhead she rightfully saw me as.

My angel wept harder.
