“I will. I’m supposed to. That’s the point,” she said firmly. “I have a lot to learn in very little time, and that includes working and learning and defending myself while exhausted. I’m a beginner in the meantime… Wait a minute, where was Marilyn? Is she not training? I didn’t see her today.”

“She’s with me,” I said carefully.

“And what level, pray tell, are you?”

I was starting to hate this whole thing the more we talked about it. “At expert. After the dream testing, Guardians were waiting for us. Marilyn and I were escorted somewhere away from Mikey and Johnny. Neo wasn’t with us. I think he was serious about not wanting to train.”

“So you’re almost strong enough to be a Guardian?”

I sighed. “Yeah. We have a few practicals, a physical, and then we can help with patrols and other duties. We can never be Fae Guardians—only humans and those with fae blood can. Apparently, even some with fae blood don’t survive the initiation stage. It’s a biology thing.”

Aria rolled her eyes. “Of course it is. That means Johnny and Mikey are intermediate, then?”

“I assume so. I saw them once briefly while we ate, but I think it was understood.”

“Lucia said we’d be training on top of our duties? Is it the same for you?”

“My duties are supposed to be getting you pregnant and shadowing the Guardians, Aria,” I reminded her.

Her skin flushed, and I couldn’t help my laugh at the shade of red she turned. “Don’t remind me,” she murmured. “What are the others doing? I know Reese is working with one of the scholars.”

I hummed, combing my fingers through the silky strands of her hair. “Johnny and Mikey are working together with developers. I think they’re helping plan a few more safe haven settlements across Europe. Mikey mentioned something about kids, but I wasn’t paying attention. He told me he double-majored in civil engineering and education, though he couldn’t go to his own graduation because Azazel didn’t approve of either one. He graduated with Honors and had his diploma shipped to a PO box.”

“That’s terrible, Sariel.”

“I wish I had known,” I said, mood dropping. “I wish I hadn’t stopped paying attention.”

“There’s nothing you can do now except keep him alive and make up for lost time.”

I inhaled deeply, filling my lungs with her scent. “You’re right.”

“In other news… did you notice how Lucia and your brother looked at each other?”

I frowned. “No, I didn’t, and I don’t want to know. Lucia is the Queen’s sister, and I want to believe that my brother is smart enough to understand that she’soff limits.”

Aria sighed. “Well,Ithink they’d be cute together.”

“And I would like to keep my brother alive. Thank you very much.”

“Please, Sariel.” She laughed, pulling away from me to sit up in bed. “They’d be ecstatic. A fallen angel and a fae in love, possibly screwing and procreating? They’d love it.”

“You forgot that the fae aren’t monogamous,” I said disapprovingly. “The last thing we need is my brother heartbroken over a fae.”

I paused as the sound of shuffling feet spilled into the room. I lowered my voice to a whisper. “Speaking of procreation, there are Guardians outside our doors.”

Aria’s brows furrowed. “Yeah, for our protection. We knew they would be there.”

“They’re likely doubling as spies too, babe,” I said, my lips twitching when her eyebrows disappeared into her hairline. “They’re more likely to report to Tarragon and Blossom than they are to protect us from one of their own.”

She blinked in shock. “But they said—“

“Theyagreed not to spy,” I interrupted. “They didn’t agree not to haveanyone elsespy or overhear.”

“But… they’re breaching the—“

“These guysaren’t,” I stressed, rolling onto my knees between her thighs. “Now, kiss me.”

“What—“
