“Each fated pair is unique,” Fern expressed, handing a book to Hemlock. “You might just be the most unique we’ve encountered in centuries.”

Hemlock clapped his hands together. “Right! We’re starting with research; you won’t be able to read these older ones since they’re written in Old Fae, but you can read these.”

He handed us a stack of newer-looking books compared to the ones Fern had returned with.

“Pause when you find something you think might apply to you, and we’ll take note of it,” Fern explained.

We each grabbed a book.

This was such a good idea,I thought.

You’re welcome. Hopefully, we’ll find something useful.

Hopefully.

THE MENACE

SARIEL

Iwas halfway to the room that Aria and I had been called to that first time—the very place our perception of this arrangement had been shattered, where we’d been forced to accept a life-changing reality—and I was so anxious, my hands were trembling.

I figured that there could be only one reason they would summon me alone.

They knew.

They knew, and they were going to deal with us one at a time.

Aria was busy training right now, too distracted by whatever hell Lucia was dragging her through to pay any attention to me. Earlier, she’d told me in a very offhanded manner that I was panicking for no reason.

Maybe she didn’t realize that I could die in there if things went sour. Or perhaps she had much more faith in my plan than I did.

Bim was my escort. Grim-faced, he didn’t say a word to me when we stopped in front of the ornate double doors.

His expression said enough, though:You’re fucked.

I’d barely schooled my features into its usual indifferent mask before the doors were thrown open.

“Sariel!” Tarragon crooned at ne. “Come in, come in!”

Thankfully, there were no writhing bodies, nor the telltale sounds of fae coupling as I stepped into the room. Tarragon and Blossom were alone, perched in the middle of the room on a raised platform that was piled high with soft-looking blankets and littered with colorful pillows in all shapes and sizes. The whole thing was far too intimate for my liking—embarrassed heat prickled the back of my neck as Blossom clutched a thick pink blanket closer to her body.

The curtains on the floor-to-ceiling windows had been drawn back, allowing the room to be cast in the gorgeous light of the midmorning sun. Flowers bloomed around the platform to create a bed of beautiful lilac flowers that clustered together like a rug.

Tarragon motioned to one of the benches, which resembled the one Hemlock had created in the library earlier.

Stifling a sigh, I lowered myself onto the tangled roots.

I didn’t like anything about this. It was obvious what they’d been doing before I got her, and they hadn’t even bothered to scramble for some semblance of decency.

“The last thing we wanted to do was interrupt your day, but this is important,” Tarragon began. “You can return to your partner as soon as we’re done.”

Okay, then. Maybe theyweren’tgoing to kill me. “What is it?” I asked.

“Your father has requested permission to enter the Free Kingdom with an alpha and a contingency of wolves.”

The blood in my veins iced over, then thawed within seconds as a hot surge of frustration rose within me.
