I turned and stared at him. He stared back. “What? I learned how to hotwire a car in one.”

“Whydid you learn that?” I asked, almost mad.

He shrugged instead of answering me.

In spite of my protests, we all went and located a repo lot in the underpopulated outskirts of Teufen. Conveniently, it was closed for the day. This wasn’t a huge city, so there were only about six cars to choose from in the lot. As long as they functioned and had enough gas in them to get us where we needed to go, that was all we needed.

Marilyn had enough magic in her to temporarily shut down all the cameras and alarms in the repo lot’s area. Sariel broke the main gate’s lock, and then he and Johnny teamed up to wheel it wide open.

Reese and Sariel immediately got to work with checking gas levels, engines, and so on for all six vehicles. Whichever ones were in the best shape would be ours.

While the rest of us hung back, I looked over at Neo and Marilyn. “How are you two feeling?”

“Better,” Marilyn said.

“Like a sack of rocks,” Neo said. “I need a nap.”

“Reese and Sariel are probably going to drive since they’ll know what to do with a hotwired car. We can all nap on the road,” I suggested.

“Sounds great,” he answered, visibly wilting. “I’m ready to pass out.”

“Should I get more food?” Johnny wondered, eyeing the nearby worker’s building. “I think we’ll need it.”

“We’re already stealing two whole cars. Might as well steal the employees’ food, too,” I grumbled.

“If it makes you feel better, these cars are already repossessed, and these repo companies are always scummy,” Marilyn quipped. “Trust me, I’ve seen what they do. Steal whatever you want. They’ve probably evaded a lot of taxes.”

Johnny laughed a little, then went to bust open the building.

Before too long, Reese and Sariel had gotten two of the cars hotwired; one that looked like a 90s four-wheeler and another that looked like an 00s truck, neither of which had logos I could recognize or names I could pronounce. Their gas mileage probably sucked, but their tanks were almost full, which was a lot more important.

Johnny returned with even more food that didn’t need a microwave to eat—fruits, prepackaged goods, and sandwich supplies—so we divided it and our people amongst the two cars. Sariel and I would take the two-seater truck, while the other four would take the slightly spacier four-wheeler with Reese at the helm. It was decided that her car would take the lead, as Marilyn would be able to read the road signs.

“I wish I had my damn phone,” Reese lamented as everyone piled in. “It would be so much easier to find out where that Zit-glug Tower is that way.”

“Zytglogge,” Marilyn corrected.

“Sure.”

We were on the road as quickly as we could manage—after making sure to stage the repo lot like we’d never been there. By the time the cameras came back on, any employees had got there to notice the theft, and the human authorities were alerted, we would have already abandoned the cars in Bern.

After snaking our way through Teufen’s roads and backroads, we successfully reached the highway and went no faster than the speed limit said. Getting pulled over while on the run from fae authorities—in stolen cars, no less—was the last thing we needed.

Once we were a few miles down on the road and further and further away from where the fae had likely tracked us down to, the more and more I relaxed, up until I let out a huge, shuddering breath.

Are you okay?Sariel asked.

Yeah, all things considered,I said. Now that we’re allowed to take a moment of rest, I’m realizing how badly I stink of sweat.

As soon as we’re safe, I’ll find you a place where you can have a nice, long, hot bath,he said soothingly.

You’re going to need a bath, too.

Hey.

I chuckled a little, but it quickly died down under the stress I was feeling.

Do you mind if I sleep a little?I asked him.I’ll cover you the next time we get the chance.
