“You don’t even have to be separated,” Azazel continued. “If you come willingly, we’ll let you stay together.”

Sariel’s eyes narrowed. That didn’t add up. If they intended to use me as a guinea pig, they had to know that Sariel wouldn’t let that happen if we were together.

The fae gave them bright ideas. Azazel is hoping a child will come out of keeping us together.

I frowned at Sariel’s thoughts. There’s no end to the level of depravity, is there?

I’m afraid not. We have bigger things to worry about right now, though—we’re boxed in.

No chance we can fight our way out of this?I asked, backing up into Reese. She’d turned around to face the wolves that circled us.

We don’t have much of a choice. Let’s see how well that fae training worked.

Sariel, this space is too confined,I observed, glancing up at the staircase that lined the wall and the cone-shaped ceiling. If Sariel and Azazel shifted in here, they could bring it down on us.

He chuckled. Not to mention a prominent tourist attraction. I don’t think they’ll be pleased when we take the whole thing down.

Fuck.

Better in here than out there, where civilians could end up as collateral damage, he reasoned.

And us? If this shit comes down on us—

We have a greater chance of surviving. Besides, if it comes down, we’re all trapped. Them included,he said as Azazel reached the last step and raised a questioning brow in our direction.

Shit.

“Well? Are you coming willingly? Or are we doing this the hard way?”

Sariel spoke before I could. “Fuck you,” he spat.

With a sigh from Azazel, all hell broke loose.

THE SUPERIOR SPECIES

SARIEL

In a split second, the fallen-blood wolves were shifted and lunging for us. In the next, they were blown back by some wave of unknown power.

Our group had been poised to fight back, but now we all froze in place, wide-eyed.

A burst of noise came from the Tower’s entrance, drawing all of our eyes. Out of nowhere, Guardians poured in through it, immediately taking offensive stances against the fallen-blood wolves, spears, and swords in hand. Just like how the wolves had been surrounding our group moments ago, the Guardians circled us, their armored backs to us.

The tourists were now mysteriously absent, and everything around us was very, very quiet.

One fae stepped out of the crowd. When I recognized him, surprise coursed through me—from the bond, I could feel Aria’s own shock.

How was Grel here? Shouldn’t he have been jailed by now?

What the hell is this?I asked Aria. What’s he doing up and about? Did he change his mind?

He would’ve just captured us earlier if he wanted to do that, not take the much harder route of chasing us down and then doing it, she reasoned back.I don’t know why he’s free, either.

Maybe they didn’t catch him helping us? How, though?

It could be that he separated from Penelope and Lucia soon enough. Or… maybe he lied to the fae somehow, like doing something to display his loyalty.
