The ringing, pain, and even the telltale sounds of chaos ensuing were gone. I cracked my eyes tentatively to find Sariel’s face hovering over mine.

“Are you okay?” he asked frantically. He helped me sit up, poking and prodding at me gently.

“Areyou?” I asked back, eyeing him carefully. The Guardians had confiscated our packs while cuffing us, and whatever Barimuz had done had shredded Sariel’s shirt, exposing his torso. “I’m fine, though. Where the hell are we?”

“Shinjuku Gyoen,” Barimuz answered. “We’re in Tokyo.”

“What the fuck do you want from us?” Neo snapped before anyone else could speak. He moved between Reese and Barimuz, and the latter honest-to-Godgiggledat the movement.

“Not even a thank you?” he snickered out. “I did just save you from having to return to Tarragon and Blossom’s orgy pit.”

Neo glared. “We didn’t need your ‘help.’”

This is the same Barimuz who possessed Neo to get information from you?Sariel asked me.

Yes.

He’s toying with Neo,Sariel said, cocking his head as he observed them.

He might be the only one who can provoke Neo to actual violence by just existing.

“You two know each other?” Johnny asked, interrupting their squabbling.

“Intimately,” Barimuz said with a grin. At the same time, Neo growled out, “No.”

“What do you want from us?” Sariel asked. “Why save us from the fae?”

Barimuz shrugged his big shoulders, his horned head tipping back. “I was following orders.”

“Orders from who?” Reese asked, finally finding her voice. She was still trembling, and I could hear her heart beating wildly in her chest, but she stared unflinchingly as Barimuz turned to her.

“Ah, a human girl,” he purred.

“Answer the question,” Neo snapped.

“Who else would I, a demon of mycaliber, be taking orders from?”

If he had eyebrows, he would be raising them indignantly at us.

“Lucifer,” I breathed. “You’re here on Lucifer’s request?”

“Naturally,” he deadpanned. “And I could not pass up the opportunity to see my favorite angel of despair. Hello, Neo.”

Neo straightened to attention. “Fuck you.”

“I don’t think the higher-ups would sanction that….”

“What do you want, Barimuz?” I pressed. “Seriously.”

“Lucifer wants an audience with you,” he singsonged.

“No, thank you,” Neo answered before we even processed what Barimuz had said.

Barimuz’s grin turned terrifying. His lips drew back across his teeth into an inhumanly wide curve. “You’renot invited.”

Sariel and Neo bristled.

“He only wants Sariel and me?” I guessed.
