Arianna’s lips twitched like the memory was one she thought funny. “We didn’t meet again until almost fifteen years later.”

“And even that was short-lived,” Terrell said quietly. The mirth seeped from the room like a fog, leaving behind dry apprehension and annoyance in his expression. “My family ruined it for me. Forus.”

“Tylerruined it for us,” Arianna corrected. “Your mother was a wonderful woman, considering who and what she was.

Terrell swallowed loudly. “I wonder how she’s doing. I hope she’s okay.”

“Lexan Bastille is dead,” Michael said monotonously.

We were silent for a few seconds as we absorbed his words.

“Who ishe?” Terrell finally said, pointing at Sariel. “Why is he here?”

“He’s my—”

“I’m her soulmate, Sariel Ambrose.”

Terrell stiffened. “You wouldn’t happen to be related to—”

“Azazel Ambrose? Yes. I’m his son,” Sariel finished for him. His defenses were high; I could tell.

You don’t think I care about his opinion of you, do you?I asked. He’s my dead father. I barely know him.

Tell that to my angel,he replied. He knows something I don’t. I’m trying to stop myself from bowing to him.

“And yet you’re her mate,” Terrell said slowly.

“I think it’s fitting that you two should find each other,” Arianna said.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Arianna!” Terrell snapped. I jumped at his tone, and Arianna flinched. “They’re not us! Azazel is the man who ruined our lives, the man who brainwashed Tyler! You can’t expect me to support this!”

“It’s a good thing I don’t care,” I said. “And I hope a man who hasn’t done anything but create me would understand why his opinion wouldn’t matter in this situation.”

“You don’t know what his father has done—”

I cut Terrell off with a snarl that shocked him into silence. “You’ve been dead for a long time. You don’t know what’s changed, what he’s done, and how much Sariel has sacrificed for me. I’ll thank you to not speak on things you don’t know about.”

Silence enveloped us afterward.

I’m going to kiss you until we’re dizzy when we get out of here,Sariel said down the bond.Among other things.

I will defend you for free,I assured him.

“Now, the reason I asked you to come here was to confirm that you were mates,” I continued.

Arianna nodded. “We are. My father and his mother helped us keep it a secret for as long as we could. If Tyler hadn’t met Azazel… if he hadn’t gotten mixed up in illegal things… we might have been able to keep it a secret for a little while longer.”

“And then he killed us,” Terrell said. “The idiot.”

“Yes. The idiot.”

Sariel’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t sound too beat up about it.”

“We’re over it,” Arianna sighed. “We’ve had time to stew. As much as Terrell may never forgive his brother, we’ve learned that holding onto hatred will get you locked up in a place like this one.”

Lucifer choked. “What’s wrong with this place? And to think I made it pleasant for you.”

Arianna sniffed. “You could’ve tried harder.”
