“I just don’t see what the point of this is,” he grumbles. “It’s not going to work.”

I frown, studying him for a moment as I try to figure out where this is coming from. It’s more than his usual bitching about whatever item we’re checking off his list; this feels more like he’s given up on the whole thing. And then it hits me. “Did you talk to Trent today?”

Jack flinches, his eyes widening. In obvious surprise to be called out. “What? No.”

I roll my eyes. “Save it. I FaceTimed with Xav, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out you must have spoken to Trent at the same time.” Of course, with such a limited window where the time zones line up it would make sense for them to each want to make their calls home.

Jack lets out a heavy sigh and slumps into the couch. “Fine, okay, yes. I spoke to him. And it made me realise just how ridiculous all this shit we’re doing is. It was like the second I saw his face and heard his voice all the feel- ings just came rushing back.”

“Macey, it’s only been a week and a half,” I remind him as I relax back in the armchair. “And we’ve barely even started the list yet.”

He leans forward, eyes fixed on me in a hard, intense look. “Tell me, with a straight face, that you genuinely think this is going to work.”

“I think it’s already working,” I tell him, not breaking eye contact. “You just need to get out of your own way so you can see that for yourself.”

He looks at me with obvious confusion. “I just told you I’m still in love with Trent. How do you get ‘it’s already working’ from that?”

I shrug. “You told me that when you spoke to him all your feelings came rushing back at you—not the ideal situ- ation, but that’s okay, we can work with that. What I’d like to know is, where were they? Before they came rushing back.”

Jack just stares at me for a long moment before shaking his head, still looking mystified. “I...I’ve been distracted.”

“So distracted you haven’t really been thinking about the so-called love of your life?”

He shoots me a hostile look, jaw clenched. “Don’t minimise this.”

I hold my hands up to ward off his ire. “I’m not. I’m simply trying to point out that what we’ve been doing hasn’t been as useless as you thought. And we’ve barely even started yet,” I add with a smirk.

Jack considers this for a moment before finally nodding. “Okay. Yeah, I guess it couldn’t hurt to keep going a bit longer .”

I prop my legs up on the coffee table and nod at the TV. “Enough chit chat. Let’s do this.”

“This is so bloody weird,” Jack murmurs as he flicks on the TV and brings up the same porn streaming app he showed me when I was here last time.

The video’s hot so it doesn’t take long for either of us to get pretty caught up in it. My gaze is fixed to the TV, but I still can’t help noticing Jack from the corner of my eye. And the fact that every now and then I can feel his attention on me turns me on in a way I never imagined could happen in the presence of Jack Macey.

“You want to touch my dick?” I offer, surprising myself with the suggestion.

“Hell no,” he grumbles. “Stop being so fucking creepy. It’s weird enough that we’re doing this in the first place.”

I let out a soft breath of amusement. “Probably just as well. Pretty sure my stiffy would deflate as soon as you put your hand on me.” But for the first time, the dismissal rings as insincere, which is a little worrying.

Just over a week ago I listened to Jack get himself off, and it had beenhot. He’d narrated the porn he was watching in between all his grunts and groans and I’m sorry but who wouldn’t be turned on listening to that? I figured it was just a fluke thing because a) I couldn’t actually see him, and b) he went five minutes without being a total dick. I definitely wasn’t attracted to him a couple of days later when he couldn’t wipe that smarmy smirk from his face the entire time Stacey was fucking up my hair.

I’mnotattracted to him. Idon’twant him. And yet...I just offered for him to touch my dick, which is definitely not something I planned.

The sooner I hook him up with one of my mates, the better .

“I CAN’T BELIEVEI let you bring me here,” Jack says, eyeing Rob’s house as though it’s a haunted mansion and he’s likely to be eaten alive by carnivorous ghosts if he sets foot in there.

I quirk a brow at him. “You can use the safe word if you really want?”

He considers it for a moment, then shakes his head. “Let’s just do this.”

I don’t bother ringing the bell, instead just letting ourselves inside like I usually do. As we step over the threshold, I notice Jack take a huge gulp of air and hold it. “Why are you holding your breath? We’re not under water .”

He scowls at me and his breathing returns to normal. “I don’t know. Instinct.”

I roll my eyes. “Right.”
