I let out a heavy sigh. Whether I help or not, our plans have been thoroughly thwarted. “Yeah, fine. And I’m assuming I’m supposed to take off after we set up?”

“What? No, you should stay for the party.”

“You want me to stay for Alastor’s party?” I ask dubi- ously. I’m not sure I’ll be able to be in the same room as

him and not jump his bones; having other people around won’t change that.

“Ow!Fuck!” I groan as Alastor issues a swift kick to my shin.

“You alright, mate?” Trent asks.’

“Yeah, fine. Just...stubbed my toe. Hang on.” I pull the phone from my ear and glare at Alastor. “What?”

“Come to the party, we can sneak off and have sex.”

I roll my eyes. “Fine.” To Trent, I say, “Okay, whatever. See you at one.”

I end the call and put my phone away, offering Alastor an arched eyebrow. “Apparently Xav’s taking you out for lunch.”

His lips form into a sly smirk. “I think I’m in the mood for nice, expensivesteak.”

I give a wry shake of my head and dig into my crepes, almost choking when Alastor speaks again.

“You know, it might be time to tell them about this.” He waves his fork back and forth between us.

I manage to swallow my mouthful and send him a sharp look, a little stunned at his words. “You want to tell them?”

He shrugs. “I was kind of expecting this to fizzle out before they got home, but it hasn’t, so if we want to keep fucking, we’re going to have to tell them. Otherwise they’ll keep pulling really inconvenient shit like this.”

I nod. “Yeah. Makes sense. They’re going to have a fuck ton of questions though...” I sigh and offer a wry smile. “Let’s just get through today and then we can figure out how to tell them without going into detail about how it all started.”

He nods. “Deal.”

A wave of relief rushes through me to know we’ll be keeping this to ourselves a little longer. It’s not even my concern over all the questions Trent and Xavier will have that’s holding me back. The fact is, I want to know exactly what it is that’s between Alastor and me before we let anyone else in. I know how I feel, and I think I’ve seen glimpses of that reflected back at me, but I’m not sure yet.

“Hey—happy birthday,” I say with a grin. “You’re all caught up to me now.”

He just glares at me. “Fuck off, Macey.”

Ireally love Xavier, but damn, he can be a real pain in the arse sometimes. Thirty-seven is such a nothing birthday. It’s the birthday that puts you squarely in the ‘late thirties’ category rather than the ‘mid-thirties’ one. It’s definitely not one I planned to celebrate with any gusto. In bed, all day, with Jack. That’s all I wanted. But I can’t really blame my best mate for thwarting that plan considering he has no idea there’s even anything going on between us.

I’ll admit, it is nice to actually catch up in person after his long stint away and our lunch together is really enjoy- able—and not just because of the expensive steak. Taking all the stuff with Jack out of it, there are still a lot of things that have happened over the past six weeks that we didn’t get a chance to tell each other during our brief FaceTime catch ups. So we spend our lunch sharing stories about his trip, what’s been happening at work, how Carly’s pregnancy is going, my Mum and Dad’s over the top hospitality when Trent and Xav met up with them in Tuscany.

By the time we wrap things up, I’m in a much better mood than I was this morning when I first learned about the whole surprise party thing.

Then we go to my place, and I manage to put on an Oscars-worthy performance, acting surprised as hell when I find all my friends and my sisters waiting for me.

And because it’s what’s expected of me, when Xavier hands me a beer, I mutter, “You invited Macey? Seriously?”

Xavier offers a wry smile. “Play nice.”

A couple of hours later, I’m pretty much ready to explode. I’m in the kitchen, refilling the chip bowls just for something to do when Carly sidles up to me.

“So, you and Jack, huh?” she says, waggling her eyebrows at me.
