“She’s out of surgery. She did fine. We repaired the damage to her abdominal wall and took care of a small nick to her large intestine. There wasn’t any contamination like she’d have if the cut were deeper. She’s extremely lucky.”

Brown blew out a breath.

“When can I see her?” Apollo asked.

“As soon as she’s out of recovery, she’ll be moved to a room. You can check on her then.” She glanced at her watch. “Looks like by that time you’ll be a little early for visiting hours, but we’ll make an exception in this case.”

He wanted to be there when Indika opened her beautiful eyes. To be the first person she saw.

“If you’d like to go home and get some rest—” the nurse went on.

He cut her off. “I’ll stay.”

“I’ll let you know when she’s settled in the room.”

He gave a nod, and she walked out, leaving him alone with Brown.

“If you’re staying, I’m going to head home now.” Brown looked about to drop.

“I won’t leave her.”

Brown nodded. “She needs you the most right now.” Without another word, he walked out of the waiting room.

Apollo sank to the seat again, pondering the meaning behind Brown’s words. Without talking to Indika, he couldn’t be certain what her partner meant. At least he didn’t have to worry about the man trying to steal his girl, though.

He took out her phone and passed his thumb over the screen. Did she still have any photos of their time together?

On a whim, he typed in her passcode—and it worked. Apollo hesitated to dig through her private life, but that only lasted for a second. He went straight for her photos and scrolled through, pausing now and again on photos of her at work functions, a wedding, posing on the steps of a bus and flipping the middle finger.

He chuckled. His girl was strong, stubbornandsassy. The three things he’d fallen for from the start, but now he knew so much more about Indika.

Like how she’d survived the past three years.

She was as much of a fighter as he was—maybe even more. His regrets went deep. While he had a reason for his actions, she’d still been left to mourn for him.

She was definitely stronger than him.

On one photo, he found the date stamp of three years prior, a time when they were together. Holding his breath, he waited to find huge gaps in the album where she’d deleted him from her life.

Only shehadn’tdeleted him.

Their old photos popped up on the screen, of them with their heads together, arms around each other, smiling for the photo timer. He continued to flip through the album. God, so many pictures. So much life they’d lived together in a few short months.

Not nearly enough time.

“Sir?”

He looked up from her phone at the nurse in the doorway. “You can follow me now.”

Indika’s vision was one big foggy blur. She blinked several times before it cleared and everything came into focus.

Her gaze fell over a man in a cramped position in an armchair. His thick arms were folded over his chest, his head rested against the wall and his eyes were closed. She stared at him for several heartbeats, realizing his breathing was deep and even.

Apollo. And he was asleep.

Everything rushed back to her. The market. The sharp slice of pain in her stomach when Ferdinand De Leon lunged at her.
